Quando arrivi a cinquant’anni, alle spalle una carriera da protagonista della musica con i Jam, un’altra fetta con gli Style Council, una più che buona carriera solista, ci sono molte cose che potresti fare.
Ritirarti e goderti la vita, chessò, fare il produttore, fare dischi svogliati tanto per vivere di fama acquisita; oppure puoi arrischiarti in un progetto nel quale percorrere anche nuove strade e provare ad ammaliare ancora una volta il pubblico.
La scelta di Paul Weller è stata quest’ultima; il cantautore inglese, classe 1958, per quello che è l’undicesimo disco da solista ci propone un album della durata di un vecchio doppio in vinile nel quale si diverte a esporre una varietà di generi inusuale per le proprie consuetudini.

Oltre ai soliti pezzi mod-style (la title track), britpop (“Sea Spray”), e all’immancabile mistura di rock e soul funky (le morbidezze di “Empty Ring” e “Cold Moments”), infatti, il padrino di tutti i mod riserva in questo “22 Dreams” anche non poche sorprese.
Ad aprire e chiudere il disco, per esempio, sono due atmosfere indiane (“Light Nights” e “Night Lights”), e se la prima si mantiene nella forma-canzone più ordinaria, la seconda si presenta come un’estasi da spazio cosmico, fino a chiudersi con un roboare di tuoni da temporale estivo.

Roba strana per chi si aspetta le solite cose dal vecchio Paul, ma nei ventidue sogni c’è ancora di che spiazzarsi; una splendida orchestrazione pop bacharach-iana (“Black River”), una specie di Springsteen-boogie (“Push It Along”), malinconico romanticismo da tango strascicato (“One Bright Star”), piano e archi in amorevoli incontri (“Lullaby Fur Kinder”, “Where’er Ye Go”) e universi kraut (“111”).
Immancabili gli ospiti: Noel Gallagher e Gem Archer degli Oasis collaborano al rock psichedelico di “Echoes Round The Sun”, Aziz Ibrahim (Stone Roses) è la voce recitante nella mistica preghiera di “God”, mentre il grande Robert Wyatt distende la sua tromba nel patchwork jazz di “Song For Alice”, omaggio alla defunta Signora Coltrane.

A dispetto di tutte le sue diversità, “22 Dreams” è un disco scorrevole che si ascolta con estremo piacere; il talento compositivo di Mr. Weller calibra ogni episodio (tranne forse qualche pezzo della prima parte) con incredibile classe e crea anche pezzi eccezionali, vedi la ballad per piano e voce “Invisible”, meravigliosa e toccante con la sua venatura soul, uno di quei pezzi che non si trovano facilmente in giro.
La cosa però che stupisce di più forse di questo album è la freschezza che vi si respira, un disco che trasuda allo stesso tempo una matura eleganza formale e uno slancio che denota voglia di giocare e di mettersi in gioco.
Un grande autore con lo spirito di un eterno ragazzo, Paul Weller a cinquant’anni ritrova una nuova giovinezza. Perché, citando la canzone dedicata al figlio, “why walk when you can run?”.
