Paul Weller è un monumento della musica dei nostri tempi, ed ogni volta che esce un suo nuovo lavoro incrocio le dita, perché temo che possa deludermi, rivelandomi un artista ormai destinato al viale del tramonto. Ed ogni volta esulto perché questo viale resta ancora lontano, in fondo all’orizzonte.

“Wake Up The Nation” introduce il Modfather nel nuovo decennio e lo fa con un suono impetuoso, identificabile come il più genuino e appassionato rock’n’roll dei nostri tempi.

Il precedente “22 Dreams” era stato ben accolto ma, pur essendo un prodotto eccellente, si dilungava un po’ troppo su alcuni passaggi, perdendo parte del mordente cammin facendo.

In “Wake Up The Nation” Weller ritrova il dono della sintesi e, ricordando la lezione del punk (fu il leader dei seminali Jam, non dimenticatelo mai!) disegna sedici pezzi uno più rabbioso dell’altro, che si riallacciano perfettamente ai momenti più nervosi dell’ottimo “As Is Now“, una delle migliori prove del Weller meno datato.

Fin dall’attacco pianistico della muscolosa “Moonshine”, è evidente l’intenzione di voler premere sull’acceleratore, foraggiando un improvviso gusto per l’esplorazione sonica, attingendo dal vasto vocabolario musicale metabolizzato negli anni.

Classicismo e modernità si sposano alla perfezione nella successiva title track, quasi una riedizione di “Let’s Stick Together“, per non parlare della seguente “No Tears To Cry”, ripiena di ascendenze soul. L’intero album è un condensato di stili in grado di spaziare dall’omaggio blaxploitation di “Aim High” agli svolazzamenti pianistici di “Pieces Of A Dream”, dalla psichedelia strumentale postmoderna di “Whatever Next” al piglio da rocker consumato di “Up The Dosage”, tutto adeguatamente condito da una montagna di effetti elettrici ed elettronici che rendono il risultato finale una gustosissima babele di suoni. Quando poi il lettore raggiunge “Andromeda”, ditemi voi come si può evitare di alzarsi in piedi per regalare una standing ovation a questo meraviglioso artista.

Una delle migliori doti di “Wake Up The Nation” risiede senz’altro nella sintesi: raramente si superano i tre minuti, e in un paio di occasioni si resta addirittura al di sotto dei due, senza che il disco abbia mai il sapore dell’incompiutezza, con un songwriting tutt’altro che scontato, denso di riferimenti alla politica e di slogan anti-tecnologici.

Fra i numerosi ospiti accreditati, segnaliamo anzitutto l’ex-My Bloody Valentine Kevin Shields, che cerca di sollevare le sorti di “7 & 3 Is The Striker’s Game”, e del leggendario batterista dei Tornados Clem Cattini, 72 anni suonati, uno che andò vicinissimo a entrare nei Led Zeppelin e che si è permesso il lusso di prestare le bacchette in 44 trasversali singoli andati al numero 1 in Inghilterra, fra i quali T. Rex, Dusty Springfield e Georgie Fame.

Desta interesse ritrovare nell’energetica “Fast Car, Slow Traffic” il bassista dei Jam, Bruce Foxton, e visto che di tanto in tanto si torna a parlare di una reunion, la cosa non può che lasciar ben sperare gli iper-nostalgici fan di vecchia data.

Fa capolino addirittura la figlia del titolare in “Find The Torch, Burn The Plans”, hit da stadio come Weller non ne ha mai realizzati in passato. La tanto strombazzata “Trees” (dedicata al padre recentemente scomparso) che avrebbe dovuto rappresentare una sorta di summa del Weller-pensiero, si risolve invece in un guazzabuglio poco riuscito di stili e influenze. In compenso, però, in “Wake Up The Nation” facciamo davvero fatica a trovare i soliti due-tre momenti di stanca presenti in qualsiasi disco del musicista inglese: soltanto la comunque rispettabile “She Speaks” si attesta sotto la media.

Certamente “Wild Wood” e “Stanley Road” erano un’altra cosa, ma “Wake Up The Nation” rappresenta nel miglior modo possibile il manifesto dei nostri giorni di un artista vivo e vegeto. E anche se oggi qualche ruga segna il suo viso, l’immortale Cappuccino Kid è ancora in grado di lanciare richiami di risveglio all’intera nazione britannica.
