Che il buon vecchio modfather abbia sempre sentito il bisogno di dare sfogo agli ever changing moods che hanno fatto della sua carriera una grandiosa storia di onestà artistica e intellettuale è cosa nota. Ciò che invece anche il più fantasioso degli ascoltatori poteva fare a meno di prevedere era un Paul Weller desideroso di mettersi nuovamente in gioco, contaminando quel britpop di cui è ancora oggi tra più illustri sacerdoti con una sbronza mistica per la kosmische musik tedesca che negli anni Settanta aveva rivoluzionato il mondo del rock.

A dire il vero, già i precedenti “22 Dreams” e “Wake Up The Nation” mostravano un’esigenza di flirtare con “alterità” che dessero nuovo respiro a un progetto solista alla lunga minacciato dallo spettro dell’autoreferenzialità ma, laddove questi ultimi andavano a tessere trame oniriche che rimandavano ora a confortanti paesaggi bucolici, ora a deliri da caos metropolitano (ambientazioni comunque storicamente centrali nella poetica dell’ex-leader di Jam e Style Council), il qui presente “Sonik Kicks” sposta l’asticella verso un universo tecnologico postmoderno che nell’immaginario sonoro di Weller rappresenta una novità assoluta.

Una volta premessa l’audacia dell’intento, viene però da chiedersi se il risultato può considerarsi effettivamente riuscito. La risposta è: solo in parte. Perché, se da un lato il minuzioso lavoro di produzione rende l’album un piacere estetico nel suo calibrato affastellarsi di elementi conservatori e futuristi, dall’altro la composizione non sempre riesce a creare l’equilibrio necessario per evitare il rischio d’irriverenza.

Difficile dunque andare oltre il piacere dello stupore quando il motorik beat di “Green” apre le danze, evocando il fantasma dei Neu! tra effetti speciali fantascientifici che sanno tanto di chirurgia plastica. Il tentativo di attraversare Stanley Road a bordo di un panzer si ripete in una “Dragonfly” (con ospite Graham Coxon alle tastiere) in cui si balla l’Hallo Gallo sventolando la Union Jack, ma risulta difficile comprendere a quale scopo.

Fortunatamente, quando la scrittura di Weller si sposta sui lidi più pop che l’hanno resa grande ci si consola con una “Paperchase” che sa di Magical Mistery Tour e, soprattutto, con il contagioso anthem di “Garden’s Overgrown” che si fa strada tra raggi laser e diavolerie barrettiane senza mai perdere la bussola. Sembra poi costruirsi da sé la ballata per acustica e archi “By The Waters”, fatta sì di tanto mestiere, ma anche di una classe cristallina; la stessa che permette a un singolo come “Dangerous Age” di scorrere leggero nel suo temerario ridisegnare la Swingin’ London in salsa hi-tech.

Si può però fare poco per mascherare inquietanti cadute di stile come gli inspiegabili singulti dal retrogusto balcanico su cui si muove a stento “Kling I Klang” o il tentativo di defibrillare un’anima da Cappuccino Kid che sembra fin troppo appassita in “Study In Blue” (in cui compare la voce della nuova moglie di Paul, Hannah Andrews).

Per quanto nobile risulti dunque il tentativo di Paul Weller di reinventare il proprio suono senza coccolarsi in rassicuranti stilemi, “Sonik Kicks” fotografa una fase di transizione in cui la qualità delle canzoni spesso non è tale da dare sufficiente credibilità alla svolta stilistica. Emblematica risulta in questo senso la conclusiva “Be Happy Children”, Motown soul infestato da droni le cui splendide intuizioni melodiche alla fine non riescono a concretizzarsi totalmente, portando così il brano a stazionare in un limbo che è quello in cui in questo momento gravita il suo stesso autore.
