Il bel visetto del Cappuccino Kid è diventato una maschera, segnato anzitempo dagli anni, vissuti con la consapevolezza di essere l’ultimo dei mod in grado di fare tendenza.

Ha ribaltato il mondo più volte, cambiando repentinamente direzione prima che qualsiasi fan potesse mai fare in tempo a stancarsi di lui, muovendosi dagli spruzzi punk post-adolescenziali degli Jam (che poi erano punk giusto per un fattore di contemporaneità), alla ricercata eleganza jazzy degli Style Council, fino a una strepitosa carriera solista, che tuttora prosegue imperterrita fra dischi e tour.

Oggi Paul ha ancora tanta voglia di fare, riversa mille idee nei propri dischi, ma dà la sensazione di apparire meno lucido, come privo di una direzione precisa da perseguire.

“Saturns Pattern”, il suo lavoro targato 2015, mette sul tavolo un crogiolo di influenze, quasi volesse omaggiare i tanti stili che lo hanno formato, spaziando dal rock al soul, architettando numerose trovate, ma senza riuscire a eccellere nemmeno su una, senza lasciare sul campo neanche una traccia che possa considerarsi memorabile.

E sì che i giochi erano iniziati neanche male, con l’assalto iper-effettato (forse sin troppo) di “White Sky” (che trova più avanti la sorellina meno riuscita in “Phoenix”), poi un pochino ci si perde fra tutto ciò che Weller avrebbe voluto e ciò che realmente è riuscito a realizzare. Prendete “Long Time”: le intenzioni son quelle di dar vita a un pezzo dal tiro supersonico, e invece finisce per risultare una canzonetta banalotta.

Poi ci son alcuni episodi ben fatti, ad esempio quando Weller ricama eleganti midtempo, specialità nella quale sovente eccelle, e partorisce tracce quali “Going My Way” o “These City Streets”, non certo pezzoni da greatest hits, ma gradevoli quanto basta. La title track non lascia il segno, e non va molto meglio con “Pick It Up”, “I’m Where I Should Be” o la più psichedelica “In The Car…”, troppo convenzionali e spente per poter seriamente sbalordire.

L’ultimo disco davvero imperdibile di Paul continua a essere “As Is Now”, anno 2005 (e comunque le vette dall’accoppiata da sogno “Wild Wood”/“Stanley Road” sono distanti anni luce), poi il musicista di Woking si è lasciato prendere la mano da un eccesso di sperimentalismi che ha portato a dischi ambiziosi (ricordate “22 Dreams”? Molto meglio quando cercava nuove vie barricadere su “Wake Up The Nation”) ma non sempre a fuoco.

“Saturns Pattern” sarà probabilmente ricordato come un album deboluccio, che ha il merito di preservare l’entusiasmo dell’autore ma che rischia di ridurne l’interesse da parte dei fan. Certo che a 57 anni aver ancora così tante cose da dire, per uno che di dischi ne ha licenziati un bel po’ in carriera, è un pregio che non può passare inosservato.
