Dopo aver già collaborato nel progetto Orcas, i due musicisti statunitensi Benoît Pioulard e Rafael Anton Irisarri tornano nuovamente insieme nel recente progetto nominato Gailes.

Da due maestri dell’elettronica contemporanea – il primo più contaminato dal cantautorato folk e da elementi post-rock, il secondo vero pilastro dell’elettronica più austera e descrittiva – non ci si può che attendere grandi cose. Se il progetto Orcas partiva dall’idea di creare una nuova pop-folk-music ambientale, coniugando in un perfetto equilibrio le diverse anime dei due musicisti e riuscendo a tessere trame seducenti e romantiche, nel progetto Gailes sembra che Rafael Anton Irisarri prenda il sopravvento e che sia la sua poetica a emergere maggiormente.

Basti ascoltare il primo brano: la lenta ma imponente crescita di “Requiem For An Airport Television Newsreader” è tipicamente irisarriana nell’incedere e nello sviluppo. I synth cosmici di “Surface Variations In The Snowfall” inizialmente citano i maestri tedeschi (Schulze in primis) ma successivamente la chitarra e il piano manipolati sembrano trasportarci dall’elettronica degli anni 70 a quella contemporanea in pochi secondi. Anche qui la crescita costante assume aspetti drammatici, ma è un dramma che è intriso dell’elemento romantico più caro a Benoît Pioulard.

“That Name (Again)” è composta da poche note in loop che si disperdono in un canto inconsistente, note cariche di emotività ma di estrema semplicità; potrebbe essere definita, come ci insegna Brian Eno, musica come arredamento, ma è un arredamento che non lascia indifferenti, che scava così in profondità nell’animo che non è possibile ignorarlo. Nei cinque minuti di “On Distant Fields” Pioulard influisce positivamente; da un iniziale vento elettronico nasce un arpeggio di chitarra non manipolato su cui si inseriscono brevi note di chitarra elettrica e di piano che portano l’ambient in un contesto quasi onirico e psichedelico. E’ il momento più breve ma più avvolgente, persino il più originale; il canto in lontananza è quasi religioso e ricorda da vicino la voce mistica dell’italiano Juri Camisasca.

“Seventeen Words” è un buon lavoro, ma interlocutorio nella carriera dei due musicisti, un progetto parallelo che farà da preambolo all’imminente uscita del nuovo, attesissimo, Lp solista di Rafael Anton Irisarri, che vedrà la luce a fine agosto.
