RAFAEL ANTON IRISARRI - The Unintentional Sea

2013 (Room40)
ambient drone
7.5

So too does the record's one concession to piano - on an album that is otherwise, for the first time, entirely electronic - fade out into a web of nebulous textures, only to dissolve, in the finale, into tears via the album's other gem, the desert-like "Lesser Than The Sum Of Its Part". A bow to those flows that Steve Roach explored down to the smallest detail, developing and blending them in every possible combination to score the most disparate landscapes. And the closing burst of noise followed by a synthetic choral passage feels almost like a release, followed by a hopeful prayer - a stance taken on a situation that risks jeopardising the health of the whole of California, absurdly because of what was once, long ago, one of the most beautiful natural sites in the world. Ambient music that, at the peak of its pathos, becomes music for the environment. Sublime, in the most strictly Romantic sense of the word, turned into ambient music.
