Angeli caduti, canzoni dimenticate. Bob Dylan si china su di loro, le prende per mano, le aiuta a rialzarsi. Forse non altro è che questa, la missione del songwriter: la devozione alla canzone.

Difficile, del resto, immaginare una motivazione commerciale dietro alla scelta di Dylan di pubblicare un nuovo volume di riletture di standard pop americani: anche se il precedente “Shadows in the Night” ha ricevuto l’immancabile plebiscito della critica, quanti sentivano davvero il bisogno di ritrovare Dylan ancora una volta alle prese con il repertorio di Frank Sinatra?

Ma al vecchio menestrello, appunto, interessano solo le canzoni. E queste, per lui, oggi sono le canzoni più vere di tutte.

In realtà, lo infastidisce persino definirle cover: “È una sorta di termine denigratorio, una parola che si è insinuata nel gergo musicale. Negli anni Cinquanta o Sessanta nessuno l’avrebbe capita. Fare una cover vuol dire nascondere qualcosa”. Il suo scopo, invece, è tutto l’opposto: non coprire, ma svelare. Non sovrapporre alle canzoni la sua personalità, ma permettere alla loro essenza di emergere, di riaffiorare dopo decenni di stratificazioni musicali.

“Se non credi a quello che dice una canzone, se non l’hai vissuto, non ha molto senso interpretarla”, afferma deciso Dylan. “Un attore finge di essere un altro, un cantante no. Non si nasconde dietro a nulla. È questa la differenza”. La chiave di tutto sta in questo tipo di immedesimazione, nel bisogno di riappropriarsi della verità delle parole più semplici. Un po’ com’era accaduto oltre vent’anni fa con un altro fondamentale dittico di album, quello composto da “Good As I Been to You” e “World Gone Wrong”.

La formula, insomma, è la stessa di “Shadows in the Night”: arrangiamenti eleganti e austeri, microfoni vintage pronti a catturare il calore di ogni respiro, una band dai meccanismi perfettamente oliati. E Dylan a vestire da par suo i panni del crooner, compensando in convinzione i limiti di una voce non certo nata per un canzoniere di questo genere.

“Fallen Angels” si destreggia tra le ombre e i fantasmi delle sale da ballo di ieri con un tocco appena più lieve del predecessore. Questione di sfumature, dall’andatura swingante di “That Old Black Magic” ai profumi esotici di “On a Little Street in Singapore”, di accenti grazie a cui le atmosfere del disco sembrano farsi stavolta meno notturne. Eppure, il brano intorno a cui lo struggimento melodico si avviluppa più strettamente è proprio quello che sin dal titolo (“Melancholy Mood”) evoca a chiare lettere il velo della malinconia.

Scampoli di archi e fiati accarezzano delicatamente i contorni di “Maybe You’ll Be There” e “Skylark”, mentre la vena sentimentale di vecchie torch song come “All the Way” (regina della notte degli Oscar del 1957) e “It Had to Be You” (ricordate “Harry ti presento Sally”?) assume una declinazione più assorta che mai al passo delle spazzole.

La pedal steel di Donnie Herron e la chitarra di Charlie Sexton continuano a tenere il centro della scena, intrecciandosi come fili d’argento al chiaro di luna di “Polka Dots and Moonbeams”. Sfiorarsi danzando in un ballo di campagna e restare legati per sempre l’uno all’altra: è proprio questo senso del destino, in fondo, il vero protagonista di “Fallen Angels”. Il “simple twist of fate” che lega in una trama misteriosa gli incontri di una vita, come sembrano suggerire le carte da gioco della copertina. Quando il groviglio si dipana, il tempo non ha più l’aspetto di un nemico: “If you should survive to a hundred and five/ Look at all you’ll derive out of bein’ alive”, mormora Dylan trasformando la vecchia hit di Sinatra “Young at Heart” in un apocrifo country. “And here is the best part, you have a head start/ If you are among the very young at heart”.

Un cuore sempre giovane, un cuore che non mente. Non c’è augurio migliore di questo, a pensarci bene, per le settantacinque candeline di Mr. Zimmerman.
