Un disco di canzoni di Natale a ottobre? Ma soprattutto, un disco di canzoni di Natale di Bob Dylan?! Ebbene sì, non è uno scherzo: il vecchio Bob ha trovato ancora una volta il modo per lasciare tutti quanti con un palmo di naso… Ad appena qualche mese di distanza dall’ultimo Together Through Life, eccolo tornare in scena nei panni di un improbabile Santa Claus, per misurarsi con il più classico dei repertori natalizi. E ancora una volta, smaltito lo sconcerto, non resta che armarsi di buona volontà e inseguire la scia della sua slitta…

Immaginate la mattina del giorno di Natale: cielo terso, aria di neve, rintocchi di campane e tutto quanto. Sì, proprio come nell’epilogo del “Canto di Natale” di Dickens. L’arcigno Ebenezer Scrooge scende in strada con il cuore traboccante di buoni sentimenti, sorridendo felice ai passanti increduli. Immaginate che il burbero Scrooge, per mostrare al mondo i suoi generosi propositi, si metta improvvisamente a cantare, con una voce rauca che risuona per le vie come un latrato festoso: “Glory to the newborn king!”. Bene, ecco a voi “Christmas In The Heart”.

Liquidare sbrigativamente un disco del genere sarebbe un po’ come sparare su Babbo Natale… Meglio partire allora da una considerazione di fondo: Dylan ha scelto di andare a collocarsi nell’alveo di una tradizione ben precisa, fortemente radicata nel costume americano; una tradizione natalizia che non è fatta solo di Bing Crosby e Frank Sinatra, ma anche di Johnny Cash e Gene Autry e che appartiene a pieno titolo all’universo country-folk d’oltreoceano. È rispetto a questa tradizione, allora, che va giudicato “Christmas In The Heart”. Anche in tempi recenti, del resto, gente come Sufjan Stevens (e Bright Eyes) hanno dimostrato che sotto l’albero di Natale può esserci pur sempre spazio per la creatività.

Quello di Dylan, come in tutti gli ultimi dischi, è un omaggio rispettoso e devoto alla musica di una volta: i suoi canti di Natale non sfuggono all’inevitabile tripudio di campanelli, renne e fiocchi di neve. Ma il sornione Mr. Zimmerman non manca di strizzare l’occhio al sapore vagamente surreale della sua svolta natalizia: basta dare un’occhiata all’artwork del disco per rendersene conto, con la slitta da vecchio biglietto d’auguri della copertina a fare il paio, sul retro, con un’immagine della storica pin-up Bettie Page in ammiccante versione Santa Claus…

Non c’è da stupirsi, insomma, che “Christmas In The Heart” sia ancora una volta un disco fatto di contraddizioni. Da una parte c’è la sobrietà un po’ ruvida di brani come “The Christmas Blues” e “Do You Hear What I Hear?”, che evitano le orchestrazioni stucchevoli tipiche del genere per affidarsi alle mani dei consueti sodali che accompagnano Dylan sul palco (con l’aggiunta come in Together Through Life di David Hidalgo dei Los Lobos). Dall’altra c’è il contorno lezioso di coretti in stile Andrew Sisters che fanno da sfondo a “Hark The Herald Angels Sing” o “The First Noel”. Da una parte c’è il sorriso un po’ frivolo di “Winter Wonderland”, dall’altra la seriosità da crooner di “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”. Da una parte c’è il profano di “Christmas Island”, dall’altra il sacro di “Adeste Fideles”, con Dylan a scandire i versi in un traballante latino da ubriaco, che finisce per produrre un involontario effetto comico.

Eppure, dal suo cappello da Babbo Natale Dylan sa estrarre a sorpresa numeri come “Must Be Santa”, che (prendendo spunto dalla versione dei misconosciuti texani Brave Combo) trasforma una classica filastrocca natalizia in una polka a rotta di collo, a cui la fisarmonica di Hidalgo conferisce un irresistibile sapore da sagra di paese. Se anche il resto del disco avesse avuto lo stesso piglio, avrebbe potuto suonare come il Grinch impegnato a divorare spartiti natalizi… Ma evidentemente non era questo che interessava a Dylan: gli elogi senili sembrano averlo stufato, sembrano avergli fatto venire voglia di ricominciare a spiazzare il proprio pubblico (nel bene e nel male, come sempre), quasi che il plauso raccolto da dischi come “Love And Theft” e “Modern Times” fosse diventato ormai troppo unanime per i suoi gusti.

Il problema di “Christmas In The Heart”, alla fine, è proprio la mancanza di personalità: Dylan vuole ricreare l’atmosfera natalizia della sua giovinezza, ma lo fa attenendosi pedissequamente alla tradizione (con il pensiero rivolto a Re Elvis), senza mettere quasi nulla di suo sotto l’albero. Sull’onda della nostalgia, Dylan si limita a prestare la sua inconfondibile voce a una serie di canoni riprodotti con tutta la fedeltà possibile, da “Little Drummer Boy” a “Silver Bells”, fino ad arrivare all'”Amen” conclusivo di “O’ Little Town Of Bethlehem”.

Gli intenti benefici (tutti i proventi del disco andranno al World Food Programme) non bastano a nobilitare gli esiti musicali di “Christmas In The Heart”. Se proprio siete stati visitati come il vecchio Scrooge dal fantasma dei Natali futuri, compratelo per fare una buona azione. Ma non fatevi illusioni, quando metterete il disco sul lettore.
