“Vederlo sul palco è stata un’esperienza incredibile: faceva e diceva esattamente quello che provavo dentro”. È l’aprile del 1963 e un entusiasta compagno di college racconta così al folksinger Erik Andersen il suo primo impatto con il nuovo paladino del folk, Bob Dylan. Meno di un mese dopo, il ventunenne Dylan si presenta sulla scena del festival folk della Brandeis University, nel Massachusetts. Lo sguardo degli studenti raccolti intorno al palco, sorpresi di specchiarsi in quel ragazzo armato di chitarra e armonica, è il punto da cui partire per accostarsi all’ennesimo capitolo del catalogo storico dylaniano. Perché è l’immedesimazione la chiave di un live d’archivio così strettamente legato al sentimento di un’epoca.

È il fascino del nastro perduto ad avere suscitato interesse intorno alla registrazione del breve set di Dylan al festival della Brandeis University: non la consueta edizione ufficiale di qualche leggendario bootleg, ma un documento dimenticato, riemerso frugando tra i ricordi lasciati dal co-fondatore di “Rolling Stone” Ralph J. Gleason. L’operazione discografica di cui è stato fatto oggetto, però, rimane piuttosto spregiudicata: pubblicato l’anno scorso come bonus esclusivo per chi acquistava tramite Amazon l’ultimo volume delle “Bootleg Series” dylaniane (“The Witmark Demos”) vede adesso la luce come disco a sé stante, con l’aggiunta di alcune (scarne) note del critico inglese Michael Gray, autore della “Bob Dylan Encyclopedia”.

Una scelta non troppo rispettosa nei confronti dei fan, che sembra animata più che altro dal desiderio di capitalizzare il più possibile la coincidenza con la celebrazione dei settant’anni di Dylan. Anche perché il materiale del disco (appena sette brani, di cui il primo incompleto) appare effettivamente più adatto al formato del bonus che non a quello dell’album: un documento storico riservato ai completisti, insomma.

Il 10 maggio del 1963, quando Dylan suona alla Brandeis University, il suo nome è ancora uno di quelli in fondo al cartellone, sotto a gente come Pete Seeger, Jean Ritchie e Jean Redpath. “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” vedrà la luce un paio di settimane più tardi e la versione di “Blowin’ In The Wind” cantata da Peter, Paul & Mary scalerà le classifiche solo nell’estate successiva. La sua esibizione è un’istantanea scattata un attimo prima della fama, quando il futuro appare come un orizzonte ancora tutto da conquistare. L’ultima volta, forse, in cui Dylan ha voluto compiacere il suo pubblico: due giorni dopo, la decisione di abbandonare gli studi dell’Ed Sullivan Show a causa del divieto di cantare “Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues” getterà le basi della sua ascesa a icona della controcultura.

L’avvio monco della registrazione proietta subito in medias res, con un Dylan impegnato ad accattivarsi la platea grazie al numero scanzonato di “Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance”, rielaborazione in chiave effervescente di un brano del bluesman Henry Thomas. A dominare la serata è il lato dell’entertainer, con una scaletta che non a caso sciorina ben tre talkin’ blues in rapida successione: la metrica incalzante imparata da Woody Guthrie, il tono pungente della satira, la battuta posta in chiusura della strofe per strappare la risata o l’applauso contribuiscono a dare vita a una performance istrionica e teatrale.

Per il pubblico che ascolta per la prima volta le nuove canzoni di Dylan è come se quei versi dessero improvvisamente corpo all’idem sentire di tutta una generazione: come annota il suo primo biografo, Anthony Scaduto, “nelle università i giovani radicali che suonavano la chitarra rimanevano colpiti dalle sue canzoni e anche dalla fragilità della sua persona. Sembrava quasi un James Dean redivivo, un giovane sensibile il cui dolore, come testimoniavano il suo volto e il suo corpo, era onesto e profondamente sentito. Dai suoi occhi feriti, dalla sua voce angosciata scaturivano dolore e paura”.

Così, quando Dylan introduce la narrazione carica di tensione di “Ballad Of Hollis Brown”, il silenzio della platea diventa quasi palpabile. Lenta e inesorabile, “Masters Of War” riecheggia come un lamento funebre, inchiodando all’ascolto con la durezza delle sue maledizioni bibliche. Prima ancora che politica, quella di Dylan è una visione esistenziale: “quello che è veramente sbagliato è che così poche persone siano libere”, spiegherà l’anno successivo a Nat Hentoff sulle colonne del “New Yorker”. Libertà dall’ipocrisia del mondo e di sé stessi, libertà di andare fino in fondo ai propri desideri a qualsiasi costo.

Ma quello che sfiora le corde della chitarra per intonare i versi malinconici di “Bob Dylan’s Dream” davanti agli studenti della Brandeis University è un Dylan ancora sul ciglio del crinale che separa l’innocenza dalla consapevolezza, sospeso nell’ultimo rimpianto per quel tempo in cui le cose erano tutte o bianche o nere. “As easy it was to tell black from white / It was all that easy to tell wrong from right”. La melodia si dipana ammantata dalla bruma folk delle ballate inglesi: “I wish, I wish, I wish in vain / That we could sit simply in that room again”. Da quel momento in poi, non sarà più possibile tornare indietro.
