Ty Segall, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Thee Oh Sees: sono questi gli ultimi grandi protagonisti del rock psichedelico che non si svende alle classifiche. Musicisti che non si accontentano di sdoganare negli anni 10 certi suoni sixties oriented, rendendoli peraltro propri, ma decidono di farlo con modalità a dir poco bulimiche, inondando il mercato con una quantità di album e collaborazioni incrociate, tale da rendere arduo orientarsi. Dopo un 2018 di iperattività, per Segall siamo alla seconda emissione targata 2019, a pochi mesi dall’energetico live “Deforming Lobes”.

Con “First Taste” il genietto californiano compie un doppio miracolo: da un lato riesce a conservare il caratteristico suono elettricamente garage pur mettendo da parte le chitarre (questa volta si dedica alla batteria), dall’altro espande ulteriormente i propri già ampissimi orizzonti, aggiungendo screziature inedite. Sbocciano così il gospel psichedelico racchiuso in “Ice Plant”, traccia a cappella che richiama i Beatles di “Because”, le atmosfere bucoliche sottolineate dal mandolino in “The Arms” e le incursioni di fiati e strumenti poco convenzionali che colorano “Whatever” e gran parte del resto del disco.

Non mancano i consueti assalti a colpi di fuzz nell’iniziale “Taste”, le sane mazzate ritmiche nella speditissima “The Fall” (una sorta di “Brianstorm” retro-posizionata negli anni 60 con tanto di solo di batteria), gli atteggiamenti più sperimentali nei due brevi atti di “When I Met My Parents” e la digressione strumentale che arricchisce “Self Esteem”.

Se va riconosciuto che siamo distanti dal caleidoscopio onnicomprensivo che fu “Freedom’s Goblin”, “First Taste” mostra comunque ulteriori evoluzioni sonore, oltre a qualche bel colpo di genio, come nella conclusiva “Lone Cowboys” che si sviluppa fra aromi pseudo-balcanici, visioni di Zappa e glam alla Bolan. Inafferrabile Segall. Incatalogabile.
