TY SEGALL - Fungus II

Come suonerà “Fungus II”, il primo disco dell’accoppiamento all’insegna del marciume sonico tra l’instancabile Ty Segall e Black Pus (che altri non è che Brian Chippendale, voce e batteria belluina dei Lightning Bolt), è intuibile ben prima di schiacciare play su uno dei nove titoli in lista. Che tipo di suoni, energie e velocità (nel caso di Chippendale) i due sono capaci di tirar fuori è cosa nota. In più, i loschi cowboy che banchettano sulla copertina del disco insieme a un punk non anticipano nulla di buono, di rassicurante. Non è da meno il titolo, che promette fuzz urticanti come disgustose ed estese eruzioni cutanee, feedback brucianti come rash e ritmi convulsi come gli spasmi di un infetto.

Tra ripide spirali di tapping stridenti e riff catramosi, “All Is Lost” non tradisce le temibili aspettative, catapultando immediatamente l’ascoltatore al centro di un incubo sonico. L’ossessiva “Zeppelin 5”, con Chippendale che prova sfondare la pelle del rullante mentre intona un coretto mefistofelico, pigia invece il piede sull’acceleratore psych. Gli attriti, gli sfregamenti di Ty Segall sulla chitarra si fanno insostenibili in “Fist Is My Ward”, mentre il duo intona una cantilena come fossero i golem che popolano le copertine degli Oh Sees.

I suoni più interessanti, comunque torturati, sebbene più distesi li troviamo in “Harsho”. Le chitarre fregate sulle note alte innescano una tensione palpabile, i bassi intessono un’atmosfera palustre, gli effetti si sprecano, come ci si trovasse nel motore di un’astronave con gli ingranaggi scricchiolanti – capitan Chippendale non li ha oliati bene di proposito, a lui i viaggi senza intoppi non interessano.

“The Purple One” è un evitabile riempitivo western con la chitarra acustica spazzolata giulivamente; “Eagle Slaughter Graduation” rimane in territori di frontiera, ma lascia l’atmosfera da saloon per affrontare i brividi di una caccia all’uomo tra dune e secche.

Fosse la qualità di scrittura di tutti i brani all’altezza del sound dirompente e di sicuro impatto, ci sarebbe da sperare in un’evoluzione di Wasted Shirt in un progetto più duraturo del divertissement che sembra essere. Ad oggi “Fungus II” è poco più che un oggetto nice for fun: seppur di discreto valore, si tratta di materiale da completisti.
