Un album dal vivo di Ty Segall così diretto (uno dei più elettricamente intensi della sua sterminata produzione) rende giustizia a una discografia tanto dispersiva, non sempre all’altezza della fama del prode cavaliere psichedelico. “Deforming Lobes” non riesce quasi a contenere l’enorme energia che sprigiona, proponendo un menù che spazia dalle strutturate jam old school contenute in “Warm Hands” e “Love Fuzz” (non a caso, poste agli estremi della tracklist) ai fracassoni brani che bruciano violentemente nello spazio di poco più di due minuti (“Squealer”, “Breakfast Eggs”, “The Crawler”, “They Told Me Too”).

Le registrazioni sono state selezionate da tre date tenute al Teragram Ballroom di Los Angeles nei giorni della pubblicazione di “Freedom’s Goblin“, gennaio 2018, anche se nessuna traccia di quel disco è qui presente. Del mastering si è occupato (udite udite) Steve Albini, il quale ha contribuito a conferire al suono la potenza che possiamo percepire, perseguendo la (condivisibile) scelta estetica di porre in evidenza più le canzoni che il pubblico, spostato in secondo piano nel mix finale, tanto che la sensazione è quella di ascoltare delle forsennate registrazioni riprese in studio.

Se desiderate avvicinarvi alla musica del bulimico Ty Segall evitando di perdervi in cervellotici slalom e lungaggini di troppo, “Deforming Lobes” è una delle scelte più azzeccate: otto tracce che mettono in evidenza il suo lato più “heavy”, a discapito delle sponde psych o folkye ampiamente rintracciabili altrove.

In futuro Segall potrebbe spostarsi stilisticamente altrove, sperimentando – si dice – derive elettroniche: godiamoci allora questa trasfusione di chitarre che rischia di chiudere un’era per uno dei migliori menestrelli del nuovo millennio. Uno dei pochi artisti al mondo in grado di elaborare lavori moderni che sanno di antico, riuscendo a non far apparire il mix indigesto.
