Ty Segall è uno di quei musicisti non in grado di produrre dischi brutti, ma è anche fra quelli che non riescono mai a completare quegli ultimi due passi che separano dal capolavoro. Dopo esserci andato vicino con “Freedom’s Goblin”, la sua iper-attività lo porta troppo spesso a pubblicare opere discontinue. Con “Hello, Hi” tenta un percorso alternativo: lasciare un attimo in soffitta fuzz, chitarroni e psichedelia lisergica, per elaborare dieci tracce in prevalenza acustiche, fra le quali meritano menzione almeno le brillanti “Over” e “Distraction”.

Segall guarda al passato, combinando gli aromi glam di Bolan con quelli flower power di Donovan, aggiungendo spruzzatine di Neil Young e Beatles versante Harrison, rimasticando il tutto a proprio uso e consumo e omaggiando i Mantles con la cover di “Don’t Lie”. Il “Piccolo Cesare” californiano suona quasi tutti gli strumenti, nel proprio studio, con pochi contributi apportati da fedeli collaboratori, fra i quali Mikal Cronin, protagonista del solo di sax nella seconda parte di “Saturday”.

Armonioso e introspettivo, concepito all’insegna della semplicità, pur nella sua costante ricerca dell’elemento dissonante, “Hello, Hi” è una celebrazione acoustic-folk che non lascia fuori dalla porta il furore del suo autore. Inevitabile, quindi, che le chitarre elettriche si riaffaccino, in maniera decisa nell’imperiosa title track, e più controllate in “Looking At You” e “Saturday, Pt. 2”. Segall ricerca l’imprevedibilità senza andare a discapito dell’energia, in un leggero e piacevolissimo lavoro di transizione.
