DAVID BOWIE - Blackstar

2016 (Rca)
art-rock

There are also tracks that are pure, unmistakable Bowie, like the melancholic acoustic ballad "Dollar Days" or the velvety electronics of "I Can't Give Everything Away", which simultaneously quotes the opening of "Thursday's Child" and the harmonica of "Never Let Me Down".
"Sue" and "'Tis A Pity She Was A Whore" were drastically reworked compared to the versions released as 7-inch singles, the former cut down to half its length and pumped up with drum'n'bass structures, the latter losing its apocalyptic edge but gaining richer arrangement.

The title track is perhaps the most overtly prog piece of his career, capable in ten minutes of travelling from Idm to glam by way of jazz, while at the opposite end sit songs with far more essential writing, such as "Girl Loves Me", with its robotic rhythms, and "Lazarus", a kind of bluesy noise-rock steeped in noir atmospheres.
