Il 7 marzo 2025 ha compiuto cinquant’anni “Young Americans”, il disco della svolta plastic soul di David Bowie. Nel giorno esatto della ricorrenza, l’album è stato ristampato in edizione limitata come Lp masterizzato a mezza velocità e come Lp Picture Disc con un poster.

L’infatuazione per la black music, che propiziò il nono lavoro in studio dell’artista inglese, aveva radici antiche. Tra gli ascolti adolescenziali di David, blues e r’n’b a stelle e strisce occupavano una porzione rilevante. E se Little Richard era uno dei suoi idoli, per lo show Soul Train – dove poi sarebbe stato il primo artista bianco a esibirsi – nutriva un’autentica venerazione. Del resto, “Aladdin Sane” era già il diario di viaggio di Ziggy in America, mentre i concerti oltreoceano avevano rinsaldato il legame musicale con gli Stati Uniti, attraverso una progressiva mutazione di arrangiamenti e scalette, specie nella “second leg” del Diamond Dogs Tour, ribattezzata “Philly Dogs”. Con riflessi anche sulla band chiamata a registrare il disco sotto la regia di Tony Visconti, in cui irrompeva un nuovo asso di formazione soul-r’n’b come il chitarrista Carlos Alomar, oltre al fido Mike Garson (tastiere), a David Sanborn (fiati), allo strepitoso cantante Luther Vandross e a quell’Andy Newmark, già batterista di Sly & the Family Stone, che negli the '80s avrebbe contribuito alle languide sonorità venate di black dei Roxy Music di “Flesh + Blood” e “Avalon“.

Registrato proprio a Philadelphia, culla del cosiddetto Philly Sound, presso i Sigma Sound Studios, “Young Americans” fu il disco in cui, dopo Ziggy, anche il Bowie glamorous venne definitivamente seppellito, per far nascere un nuovo soulman bianco, algido e inquietante, proiettato nella nuova frontiera dell’America del funky, del r’n’b e della nascente disco music. Manifesto di questo ibrido “plastic soul”, la title track passava in rassegna vizi e virtù dell’America del Ventesimo secolo, tra riferimenti allo scandalo Watergate (“Ricordate il vostro presidente Nixon?”), alla caccia alle streghe del senatore McCarthy (“Ora sei diventato l’anti-americano”) e a un noto episodio della lotta per i diritti civili dei neri (“Stai con le mani in mano su un autobus di sopravvissuti, arrossendo alla vista di tutti i lustrascarpe neri”), citando icone del consumismo a stelle e strisce (“Ford Mustang”, “bambola Barbie”, “Chrysler”) in un antipasto della futura “I’m Afraid Of Americans” di 20 anni dopo.

Nonostante portasse addosso le scorie tossiche della dipendenza da cocaina, un emaciato Bowie affinò il suo stile vocale in chiave black, dando vita a suggestivi omaggi alla jazz-fusion come “Win” e “Right”, groove funk a presa rapida (“Fascination”) e struggimenti soul figli illegittimi di Aretha Franklin e Marvin Gaye (“Can You Hear Me”).

Ma a rendere a suo modo storico il disco fu l’incontro stellare tra David Bowie e John Lennon, alle prese all’epoca con il suo celebre lost weekend, il periodo di eccessi trascorso lontano da Yoko Ono. In una session insieme a New York, presso gli Electric Lady Studios, i due fissarono le loro caustiche considerazioni sullo stardom in un brano, “Fame”, rielaborato a partire dal riff di chitarra che Alomar aveva concepito per la cover di “Footstompin'”. Una sorta di meditazione a ritmo funky-beat sulla fuggevolezza del successo (“Fama, ti mette lì dove le cose sono false/ Fama, non è il tuo cervello, è solo la fiamma…/ Fama, quello che ottieni è nessun domani”). Non esattamente la somma degli smisurati talenti dei due autori, ma la canzone giusta per scardinare le classifiche Usa: sarà infatti il primo singolo di Bowie a salire al n.1 e trainerà l’intero album.

Per la nuova edizione di “Young Americans”, già oggetto di un remaster nel 2016, si è fatto ricorso alla tecnica di masterizzazione “half speed”, che prevede la riproduzione del nastro master a metà della velocità normale, mentre il disco viene inciso anche a metà velocità. Questo metodo permette al sistema di incisione di avere il doppio del tempo per scolpire un solco accurato, risultando in una maggiore definizione sonora, bassi più profondi e una migliore separazione degli strumenti. La ristampa è stata masterizzata su un tornio Neumann VMS80 modificato, utilizzando i master originali del Record Plant restaurati a 192kHz, senza elaborazioni aggiuntive. John Webber ha curato il mastering a metà velocità presso gli Air Studios.

Artificioso ritratto di soulman – fin dalla copertina, con la foto di Eric Stephen Jacobs ritoccata con l’aerografo – “Young Americans” divise la critica e disorientò molti fan, orfani di Ziggy Stardust. Il suo stesso autore, peraltro, non fu proprio tenero nei suoi confronti: “Non lo ascolto spesso. Non mi piace molto. È stata solo una fase”, rivelerà nel 1976 a Melody Maker. Salvo attenuare poi il giudizio, in un’intervista a Q del 1990: “A quel tempo mi esprimevo senza un particolare coinvolgimento emotivo. Ma in retrospettiva quell’album era un discreto esempio di blue-eyed soul”. Riascoltato oggi, fornisce però un ulteriore ritratto preveggente dell’artista da giovane: ancora una volta, Bowie aveva precorso i tempi, abbattendo nuovi steccati tra generi: di lì a poco, frotte di artisti bianchi sarebbero saliti sul carro della disco music, a cominciare dai Bee Gees contagiati dalla Febbre del sabato sera. Ma quando esploderà la mania della disco music, il dandy inglese sarà già altrove. Alle prese con il nuovo affascinante ibrido elettro-kraut-soul-rock di “Station To Station”. Stava nascendo ufficialmente una nuova stagione: quella del Thin White Duke.
