Presentato con gran fanfara come si confà alla tipica megalomania bowiana, in uno show interattivo di 90 minuti trasmesso per la prima volta nella storia del rock nei cinema di tutto il globo, “Reality” è, purtroppo, un altro buco nell’acqua dell’ex, glorioso Duca Bianco. Se le miracolose parentesi di “Earthling”, che lo ha visto cimentarsi in spericolate acrobazie ritmiche, e di “Outside”, che lo ha riportato per un attimo ai fasti elettronici della trilogia berlinese, avevano riacceso l’entusiasmo dei fan, il successivo “Hours” aveva attenuato l’euforia, mostrando un flebile tentativo d’imitazione dei dischi degli anni d’oro. Eppure il mito di David Bowie è rimasto sempre intatto, quasi fosse stato conservato negli anni da un’aura di sacralità. Al punto che ogni suo concerto resta tuttora un evento imperdibile.

A distanza di un anno dal decoroso “Heathen”, che sanciva un ritorno alle ballate che lo resero celebri negli 70s, David Robert Jones ripropone dunque un disco nostalgico, che guarda al passato con la mente poco ispirata del presente. Nella presentazione via satellite, alla domanda di un fan che gli chiedeva a quale album avrebbe paragonato questo “Reality”, lo stesso Bowie aveva risposto ironicamente “a David Bowie della Deram”, ovvero a uno dei suoi primissimi lavori. Ma, nonostante la produzione del fidato compagno d’avventure Tony Visconti, le undici tracce non riescono a ritrovare la magia dei bei tempi andati. A cominciare dalle due cover: “Pablo Picasso” di Jonathan Richman (incisa originariamente con i Modern Lovers) e “Try Some, Buy Some”, brano “minore” del compianto George Harrison. La prima sfodera un muro sonoro piuttosto monotono; la seconda, affogata da Visconti in un’orchestrazione fuori luogo, non trova nel canto di Bowie un motivo sufficiente per la sua esistenza.

Nemmeno il singolo “New Killer Star” riesce a spiccare il volo, lasciando le buone intenzioni impantanarsi in un ritornello pop che sfigurerebbe anche nei dischi più ruffiani dei Blur. La title track è un clone spudorato della fortunata “Hallo Spaceboy” (già remixata dai Pet Shop Boys). La chitarra affilata di “The Loneliest Guy” non riesce a graffiare più di tanto, ma almeno qui la voce di Bowie ruggisce da par suo, mentre il ritmo da ballabile atmosferico di “Looking For Water”, supportato da un giro di chitarra decisamente già sentito, sembra soprattutto frutto del inesauribile “mestiere” del Nostro. Forse il pezzo migliore del disco è “Bring Me The Disco King”, dall’incedere elegante e sinuoso, seppur alla lunga un po’ autoindulgente.

A 56 anni, padre di famiglia felice con moglie e figli, Bowie sembra aver ormai smarrito lo spirito tenebrosamente inquieto che aveva marchiato a fuoco i suoi capolavori. L’ottimismo di maniera che trapela da questo “Reality” è forse l’ennesimo rifugio dal suo cronico mal di vivere. Ma è certo che stavolta la sensazione di un “crepuscolo degli dei” è più che mai realtà. Chi ha amato il “vero” Bowie non può che rammaricarsene.
