Esaurita la gamma dei generi musicali nuovi nei quali cimentarsi, David Bowie torna all’antico con questo “Heathen”, che suona quasi come un ibrido tra lo Ziggy Stardust del periodo glam rock e il Duca Bianco di “Heroes“. Ottima creatura, si direbbe. Peccato, però, che di quella stagione d’oro Bowie conservi intatta soprattutto la voce, sempre unica ed emozionante. Non sempre così incisive, invece, le canzoni. Inutile, del resto, pretendere di ritrovare le memorabili melodie di “Life On Mars?” e di “Starman” o dei contagiosi refrain di “Heroes” e “Ashes To Ashes”. Rimane, però, qualche traccia di quell’atmosfera, insieme romantica e inquietante, tipica del repertorio di mister Jones. Si recupera anche molto modernariato elettronico, vecchi synth the '80s e anche più indietro (il leggendario Theremin, lo Stylophone), perfino l’Ems originale che Eno suonava nei suoi album di trent’anni fa e che usò anche per “Low” e “Heroes“.

Non è un concept-album, anche se un filo rosso – il paganesimo – lega tra loro tutte le dodici tracce. L’ex Ziggy Stardust dà sfogo a tutti i suoi dubbi e le sue paure riguardanti il rapporto con Dio, cui si rivolge direttamente in alcuni brani. “Il paganesimo è uno stato mentale – spiega -. Puoi riferirlo a uno che non vede il suo mondo. Non ha luce mentale. Distrugge senza saperlo. Non sente la presenza di Dio nella propria vita. È l’uomo del ventunesimo secolo”.

Il disco, in cui Bowie è tornato a lavorare con il suo produttore dei 70's, Tony Visconti, è stato registrato negli studi Allaire, vicino Woodstock, in un edificio degli anni ’20. Non mancano collaborazioni illustri: Pete Townshend, leader degli Who, suona la chitarra nel singolo “Slow Burn” (una bella, classica ballata alla Bowie, struggente e melodrammatica); mentre Dave Grohl dei Foo Fighters si esibisce alle cinque corde in “I’ve Been Waiting For You”, cover dal primo disco di Neil Young. “Clonati” anche “Cactus” dei Pixies e “I Took A Trip On A Gemini Spaceship” di The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, la bizzarra rockstar da cui Bowie ha preso una parte del nome, a suo tempo, per Ziggy Stardust.

Tra gli altri brani, l’algida “Sunday” emana gelide brezze elettroniche che vengono dritte dalla trilogia berlinese, mentre “Slip Away”, suonata da Bowie con l’antico Stylophone utilizzato nel 1969 per “Space Oddity”, rievoca sonorità spaziali. E poi, ecco due tracce parzialmente note: “I Would Be Your Slave”, già eseguita dal cantautore inglese alla Carnegie Hall di New York nel concerto di sostegno alla Tibet House e “Afraid”, già resa disponibile nel 2001 per gli abbonati di Bowienet, il provider di servizi web creato dal Duca Bianco.

“Heathen” è un disco nel complesso più che sufficiente, che regala qua e là sprazzi d’emozione vera, soprattutto perché Bowie è rimasto un cantante coi fiocchi, una delle poche “voci” del rock capaci ancora di scuotere dal torpore generale.
