PINK FLOYD - The Endless River

2014 (Parlophone)
rock

In mezzo, “It’s What We Do” trasuda echi di “Welcome To The Machine” e del finale di “Shine On You Crazy Diamond pt.2” da tutti i pori.

“Anisina” strizza, in maniera decisamente sospetta, un occhio e mezzo alla celebre “Us And Them”.

The third - and most substantial - section opens with "The Lost Art Of Conversation", a brief and persuasive back-and-forth between guitar and piano. "On Noodle Street" rests on a vaguely dub rhythm section before veering into territory belonging to Dire Straits's "Brothers In Arms". "Night Light" could pass for a film score, bearing an unmistakable resemblance to some of Angelo Badalamenti's work. The compelling theme of "Allons-y", meanwhile, could easily be a by-product of "The Wall". The fact that it too is split into two parts, just like something else we're all familiar with, certainly doesn't help change that impression. In between, "Autumn '68" seems to reference - really only in its title - the far more successful "Summer '68" from "Atom Heart Mother". Worth noting, in "Talkin' Hawkin'", is a reflection on verbal communication, recited in the artificial voice of astrophysicist Stephen Hawking.

"Calling", another cinematically evocative piece, ushers in the fourth and final side with great fanfare. "Eyes To Pearls" is essentially a reworking - whether intentional or not, we can't say - of "Moonhead", an unreleased track written by Pink Floyd back in 1969, commissioned by the BBC to soundtrack the Moon landing.

The construction of the following "Surfacing" is a device that paves the way for a pure exercise in Gilmour-style guitar playing. Closing the record is "Louder Than Words", the only proper song in the whole set. Released a month ahead of the album, it was played on radio stations worldwide, several times a day, to build anticipation and boost sales. The lyrics, written by the aforementioned Mrs. Gilmour, are naturally inspired by the band's own human story - a saga that, to paraphrase the lyrics, despite frequent clashes and more or less radical line-up changes, resonates through the history of rock music far louder than any words.

It certainly won't be a collector's relic for completists, shamelessly self-referential and far from essential, one that could ever dent a legend born almost fifty years ago and still showing no sign of ending.
