Il 1971 è un anno fondamentale per la storia dei Pink Floyd. E’ l’anno che chiude un triennio memorabile che ha prodotto i dischi psychedelic–progressive “Ummagumma” (1969), “Atom Heart Mother” (1970) e “Meddle” (1971), Lp che già da soli, senza considerare i lavori precedenti e i successivi, sarebbero valsi l’immortalità per il quartetto britannico. Il 1971 è anche l’anno degli iniziali abbozzi di “The Dark Side Of The Moon”, capolavoro che viene cambiato e perfezionato nei due anni successivi prima di trovare nel 1973 la forma definitiva che tutti conosciamo. Anni fecondi che si chiudono definitivamente e trovano una sintesi sublime con “Pink Floyd At Pompeii – MCMLXXII”, live leggendario – dal valore storico incalcolabile – che testimonia un periodo di incredibile creatività di una band che vede il canto del cigno della sua fase psichedelica, iniziata grazie alla mente del Syd Barrett di “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn”. Il 1971 è quindi un anno di passaggio tra una fase e un’altra, tra la fine dei suoni puramente lisergici e l’abbrivio verso una strada totalmente nuova, quasi un salto nel buio, che porterà a riconoscimenti e soddisfazioni senza limiti.

La grandezza del live di Pompei sta proprio nel testimoniare una temporanea e brevissima convivenza tra questa due fasi che coesistono perennemente per tutta la durata delle registrazioni: la prima fase è testimoniata nei brani suonati dal vivo, un vero monumento del periodo psychedelic dei Pink Floyd, da “A Saucerful Of Secrets” a “Meddle”; la seconda, ancora in embrione, attestata dai video delle prove in studio in cui Richard Wright, David Gilmour e Roger Waters provano “Us And Them” e il solo Wright cerca la melodia di piano di “The Great Gig In The Sky”. Due anime molto diverse tra loro, che comunque convivono senza scontrarsi, quasi come accade in un tramonto che unisce, ma allo stesso divide, il giorno e la notte.

Ascoltare per la prima volta il live di Pompei in una qualità audio così alta (in 5.1 e Dolby Atmos), grazie al lavoro di Steven Wilson, che esalta la profondità e la chiarezza del suono, rispettando l’autenticità e lo spirito della versione originale, e poterne vedere al cinema le immagini in alta definizione, è quindi un’esperienza emozionante per un concerto che non era mai stato pubblicato su cd (per questo motivo non lo trovate nella nostra classifica degli album live).

L’ascolto di “Pink Floyd At Pompeii – MCMLXXII” rende chiaramente l’idea di quale miracolo fossero riusciti a realizzare quei quattro ragazzi geniali, così tanto sicuri dei propri mezzi da rasentare la follia e l’incoscienza, tanto da portare alle estreme conseguenze tutte le loro idee, in un momento in cui l’alchimia tra loro era ai massimi livelli.

Proprio questo equilibrio tra personalità tanto debordanti è visibile in tutti i momenti del live: dalla versione esaltante di un capolavoro come “Echoes” – forse la suite apice della psychedelia britannica, sintesi magnifica dell’affinità tra Wright e Gilmour – ai brani gemelli “Careful With That Axe, Eugene” e “One Of These Days”, che raggiungono uno stile lisergico floydiano così ben riconoscibile da risultare differente dal suono di ogni band British psychedelia o Americana, praticamente irraggiungibile in intensità anche dalle formazioni più rinomate del periodo.

Le cose non cambiano nei brani tratti dal loro secondo Lp. “A Saucerful Of Secrets” e “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun”, con l’iconica immagine di Roger Waters che colpisce il gong, testimoniano la coesistenza tra caratteri tanto delineati che sanno comunque, in base alle necessità della band, emergere o farsi da parte nei momenti giusti. Proprio nella fortissima sicurezza di sé stava il seme del male che avrebbe portato al futuro squilibrio e alla successiva rottura. Come afferma infatti in una delle interviste del film Nick Mason, “le cose andranno bene sino a quando qualcuno di noi penserà di poter fare a meno degli altri”, prevedendo di fatto il futuro prossimo della band.

Un live perfetto, dunque, il cui valore storico va molto oltre quello dei singoli brani, ma è proprio la testimonianza di un’intera epoca, tra i vertici del decennio d’oro del rock. Un live in cui i Pink Floyd sanno anche prendersi momenti di leggerezza nel blues “Mademoiselle Nobs”, una versione alternativa di “Seamus”, uno dei brani acustici di “Meddle”, “cantata” magnificamente da un levriero russo di nome Nobs che ulula come in “Seamus” aveva fatto un Border Collie. Opera totale registrata in un momento di cambiamento, il live di Pompei dei Pink Floyd segna (e chiude) un’epoca della storia della musica rock. Da ascoltare e riascoltare. Da vedere e rivedere.
