BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - High Hopes

Una cosa è certa: ci vuole una buona dose di coraggio per parlare di speranza, di questi tempi. E addirittura intitolare un disco “High Hopes” suona quasi come una provocazione nel clima in cui ci troviamo immersi. Tanto più se si tratta di una raccolta di cover e outtake assortite, e non di un nuovo album vero e proprio.

Ma quando si parla di Bruce Springsteen, si sa, non si può mai dare per scontata l’equazione tra outtake e scarti. Quante volte la cura maniacale nella selezione delle scalette dei dischi l’ha portato a escludere brani tutt’altro che marginali dalla sua discografia ufficiale? A fare notizia, allora, è sufficiente la scelta di Springsteen di conferire dignità autonoma alle canzoni collezionate in “High Hopes”. Se non altro perché si preannuncia come il viatico naturale per permettergli di calcare ancora una volta i palchi degli stadi di tutto il globo.

 

Stavolta, però, c’è una differenza: quello che Springsteen si propone non è solo un recupero di canzoni dal fondo dei cassetti, ma una sorta di opera di auto-rivisitazione. L’idea ha preso forma durante l’ultimo tour australiano, quando Tom Morello ha sostituito provvisoriamente Steve Van Zandt nella E Street Band: “Tom e la sua chitarra sono diventati la mia musa”, afferma convinto Springsteen. Tanto che proprio l’ex Rage Against The Machine si è trasformato nel motore del progetto, contribuendo in maniera decisiva alla nuova edizione riveduta e corretta di un pugno di brani ripescati dagli archivi.

E qui cominciano le note dolenti, perché in “High Hopes” l’apporto della chitarra di Morello suona irrimediabilmente giustapposto, in un affastellarsi di scontatissimi assolo che non riescono mai a intercettare l’anima del songwriting di Springsteen. L’esempio più eclatante viene dalla rilettura elettrificata di “The Ghost Of Tom Joad”, che tradisce la spoglia intensità dell’originale per un pieno di enfasi a buon mercato. Il miraggio Hendrix-like resta pura velleità, senza eguagliare neppure la forza della cover già realizzata dagli stessi Rage Against The Machine negli anni Novanta.

 

Lo stesso vale per il brano che dà il titolo all’album, ripreso dal repertorio degli Havalinas di Tim Scott McConnell: anche in questo caso, la versione registrata da Springsteen nel 1995 per l’Ep “Blood Brothers” si conferma più asciutta di quella inclusa ora in “High Hopes” (che pure, con il calore dei suoi fiati, fotografa bene l’ultima incarnazione della E Street Band). Del resto, non si sentiva nemmeno il bisogno di una riproposizione in studio di “American Skin (41 Shots)”, topical song risalente al 2000 e già presente in “Live In New York City”. Ma non è la prima volta, negli ultimi tempi, che Springsteen mostra di voler riciclare anche i brani disseminati dal vivo, come testimonia il recupero in veste ufficiale di cavalli di battaglia come “Land Of Hope And Dreams” e “American Land” in “Wrecking Ball”.

Se però proprio “Wrecking Ball” era riuscito a indovinare una veste musicale tutto sommato azzeccata per lo Springsteen di oggi, “High Hopes” sembra ricalcare piuttosto il rock dai toni scialbi di “Magic”: il canone celtico di “This Is Your Sword” ha ben poco a che vedere con la contagiosa euforia delle “Seeger Sessions”, mentre il gospel di “Heaven’s Wall”, tra inserti di percussioni, archi sintetici e cori, non riesce a conquistare il vigore dell’inno (ma in concerto è facile prevedere tutt’altro destino). Non a caso, alla fine a funzionare meglio sono le cover, dalla freschezza soul-rock di “Just Like Fire Would” dei Saints (pura E Street Band d’annata) alla litania di “Dream Baby Dream” dei Suicide, che si trasforma in un crescendo di organo e tastiere già rodato durante il tour di “Devils & Dust”.

 

Direttamente dalle sessioni di “The Rising” (ancora con Clarence Clemons e Danny Federici nel gruppo) arrivano “Down In The Hole”, sorta di “I’m On Fire” funestata dalle ombre del post 11 settembre, e “Harry’s Place”, sceneggiatura da mob story alla Scorsese in cui la tensione va a perdersi in arrangiamenti fin troppo marcati. Le atmosfere acustiche di “Devils & Dust” rivivono invece nel valzer folk di “Hunter Of Invisible Game” e nel ritorno alle memorie del Vietnam di “The Wall”, dedicata al cantante dei Motifs Walter Cichon (uno degli eroi musicali del giovane Springsteen, disperso al fronte nel 1968).

Eppure, nonostante la provenienza disparata, le canzoni di “High Hopes” mostrano la coerenza di un album a tutti gli effetti, soprattutto dal punto di vista narrativo. Ancora una volta, è la capacità di Springsteen di non rinunciare mai alla storia che vuole raccontare a tenere in piedi il disco. Anche quando il mestiere dello storyteller non basta da solo a riscattare gli esiti di un lavoro ben lontano dalla forma dei tempi migliori.

 

La desolazione del tempo presente è la stessa descritta in “Wrecking Ball”, con i paesaggi apocalittici di Cormac McCarthy a riecheggiare tra le strade di “Hunter Of Invisible Game”: “These days I spend my time skipping through the dark/ Through the empires of dust I chant your name”. Un nome da cantare è tutto ciò che resta, la certezza di un volto a cui rimanere ancora aggrappati: è la certezza che si impara dai propri padri, tramandata come la spada di “This Is Your Sword”, come uno scudo per fronteggiare le avversità.

Il segreto della speranza, allora, è semplice come un innamoramento, come quell’alchimia di corrispondenza capace di travolgere tutto al passo festoso di “Frankie Fell In Love”. È Shakespeare in persona a rivelarlo al compagno di bevute Einstein: non servono i calcoli, non serve misurare, conta solo lo sguardo. “It’s just one and one make three/ That’s why it’s poetry”. Stavolta, però, il risultato dell’addizione si ferma al di sotto della sufficienza.
