Bob Dylan… 1992 e 1993… e il risultato finale allora fu “Time Out Of Mind”. (Ri)pescare (s)conosciuti brani folk dalle profonde radici musicali aveva colmato un vuoto creativo e dato la possibilità all’uomo di Duluth di ritrovarsi. Il cammino di Bruce Springsteen non sembra diverso in questo momento. “Devils & Dust” è un ottimo album, ma molti dei brani risalgono al periodo del fantasma di Tom Joad. Misurarsi con le radici della musica americana non è così semplice come dirlo. Springsteen è uno dei pochi che poteva forse tentare un’operazione simile, vista anche la scelta di brani a cui ridare una vena attuale rispettandoli, senza rischiare di sembrare pretenzioso. Già in passato fan attenti avevano potuto notare come l’influenza folk non si limitasse a “Nebraska”. E l’album “We Shall Overcome” centrava il bersaglio.

Poi la Columbia (Jon Landau?) estende la potente mano su tutto, e allora ecco arrivare “The Seeger Sessions” in tutte le possibili edizioni. Studio, Studio e Live con inediti, senza inediti con bonus Dvd. E “Live in Dublin” arriva a completare l’operazione di marketing, a dir poco discutibile, della Columbia. Sulla strada “dylaniana” del ritrovamento, la capacità di Springsteen come performer poteva segnare un punto enorme, lenendo la mancanza di materiale originale. Il tour acustico del 2005 aveva toccato vertici eccezionali al contrario delle belle ma “standard” esibizioni recenti con l’E Street Band.

Springsteen sembrava aver ritrovato quella “voce” che molti pensavano ormai persa. Le esibizioni con la Session Band (Seeger nel frattempo è sparito?) hanno confermato che le sue capacità sul palco sono ben lungi dall’esaurirsi. Gli show del tour mostravano come la voglia di provare qualcosa di nuovo, supportato da musicisti capaci, potesse dare un’ulteriore iniezione di vitalità al “nuovo” Bruce. Spettacoli emozionanti, divertenti, privi di nostalgia, azzeccati negli standard folk e nelle scelte dal catalogo personale (ok, forse si poteva fare a meno di alcune forzature). E Bruce su tutti a divertirsi, con un’energia ancora sbalorditiva. Il “Live In Dublin” doveva documentare tutto questo.

E allora viene automatico chiedersi perché? Perché si ha la sensazione che ci si immerga solo a tratti nell’atmosfera che si respirava durante il tour?

Perché non prendere una delle tre serate tenute a Dublino (scelta tra l’altro legittima visto che è musica nata esattamente li) e pubblicarla per intero, senza tagli che massacrino i brani (“This Little Light Of Mine”, “Pay Me My Money Down”, “Open All Night” su tutti), eliminando quasi tutte le introduzioni parlate e le interazioni con il pubblico che rendono un concerto di Bruce qualcosa di speciale? Ancora una volta il management di Springsteen fallisce l’obiettivo. La dimensione live di Springsteen non riesce ad aver una degna rappresentazione nel catalogo ufficiale.

Con una qualità sonora che rasenta la perfezione (cosa atipica nella produzione ufficiale springsteeniana), forte di belle, se non bellissime, esecuzioni (una strepitosa “Highway Patrolman” che non ha bisogno di presentazione), con una band che sa suonare questa musica, con felici intuizioni negli arrangiamenti (“Growin’ Up”, “Further Up On The Road”, “Atlantic City”, il valzer di “If I Should Fall Behind”) con una buona dose di divertissement (“Open All Night” e “Pay Me”, anche se come già detto rovinate lì proprio dove dovrebbero essere più efficaci…), eppure tutto ciò non riesce a togliere la sensazione che in passato scaturì dal “Live 75-85”, dall’Unplugged o dal “Live in New York City”.

No, non ci siamo cari Bruce e Jon, nonostante il “Live all’Hammersmith Odeon” del 1975 avesse fatto bene sperare e con la marea di bootleg in circolazione, alcuni dei quali meravigliosi, qualcosa avreste dovuto apprendere. E non bastano tre bonus track per colmare queste lacune, soprattutto quando una è una versione editata di “Blinded By The Light”, una “Love Of The Common People” che non aggiunge nulla e “We Shall Overcome” che avrebbe forse meritato l’introduzione nel main set.

Quindi sentite questo cd con un impianto adeguato, a volume sostenuto, godetevi tutti gi strumenti come se foste li, gustatevi le esecuzioni ma poi rivolgetevi di nuovo a qualche bootleg del tour per rivivere quella serata a Dublino, Verona, Londra o Holmdel, NJ.

Manca il cuore. E per Springsteen non è normale. (ovvero è normale nelle official release, ma non per chi l’ha visto almeno una volta dal vivo).

Nella speranza che la cura Dylan porti i risultati attesi… e “American Land”, per quanto potente e ispirata, non ci basta.
