Che l’annunciato ritorno del Boss con la consumata E-Street Band non avrebbe esplorato nuovi universi sonori era cosa facilmente intuibile; da sempre il sound dell’ensemble è caratterizzato da uno spiccato classicismo che, dal punto di vista formale, consiste principalmente di un’ossatura folk rivestita di abiti rock (‘n roll), il sound roots dei ramblers celato da poderose elettrificazioni post-Elvis. “The Rising” aveva posto fine a un distacco quasi ventennale dai vecchi compagni e si era proposto come un buon album, in alcune parti segnato da eccessivi barocchismi ma comunque foriero di speranze, attraversato com’era da alcuni ottimi pezzi che facevano presupporre una ritrovata vena creativa del gruppo dopo il buio springsteeniano degli anni Novanta e l’ottima premessa posta dal “Live At New York City”. 

Seguito del fortunato “The Seeger Sessions”, “Magic” mostra purtroppo da subito la corda, e difficilmente la sua musica riesce a sollevarsi al di sopra dell’ottimo mestiere, raramente i pezzi si innalzano a quei livelli di emotività urgente e incontenibile che hanno reso immensi i brani del periodo d’oro, quello splendido lasso di tempo compresso tra “Born To Run” e “Born In The Usa”. La musica di Springsteen, è cosa risaputa, ha sempre saputo prendere vita grazie a canzoni che, da vero storyteller, riflettevano l’universale nella loro individuale particolarità, sorrette da musiche sublimemente complesse nella loro semplicità. Ebbene, “Magic” sembra essere la negazione di tutto ciò, un pugno di ottimi pezzi in cui solo a tratti si riesce a scorgere il fulgore passato, rievocato forse in previsione di una tournée che, ne siamo comunque sicuri, saprà infiammare gli stadi del pianeta.

L’apertura è affidata al graffiante riff di “Radio Nowhere”, subito spentosi in una prima facciata priva di sorprese che si chiude con la sognante “Girls In The Summer Clothes”, pallida memoria dell’innocenza afosa di “Born To Run” (in mezzo, “Livin’ In The Future”, che appare quasi come un outtake di “The River”). Meglio la seconda parte del disco, sorretta da una “I’ll Work For Your Love” che riesce nuovamente a librarsi in una soffusa speranza (“The Dust Of Civilizations/ And Loves Sweet Remains/ Slip Off From Your Fingers/ And Come Driftin’ Down Like Rain”) e dalla cavalcante “Last To Die”, il meglio di “The Rising” con Johnny Cash e Woody Guthrie dietro l’angolo a osservare, prima di scemare nuovamente sino alla ghost track; quest’ultima, con la sua indole unplugged, fa capire quale sia forse l’unica strada che il Boss dovrebbe intraprendere per riservare qualche altra sorpresa: la riscoperta delle origini della musica americana, in un percorso simile a quello che ha ridato una terza giovinezza a Johnny Cash (con la serie degli “American Recordings”).

Il difetto principale di “Magic” sembra quindi essere la mancanza d’ispirazione (e non è poco), apparendo come un semplice pretesto per tornare di nuovo a suonare divertendosi insieme. Un peccato veniale che concediamo volentieri a Springsteen, anche se forse sarebbe bastato organizzare un tour in cui rispolverare la gloria passata. Glory days well they'll pass you by….
