"Questo approccio trasporta l’ascoltatore lungo tutto il tragitto, poiché si ascolta la musica non solo venire suonata, ma venire fatta". Parole programmatiche che il Boss scrive nella breve introduzione al suo nuovo album, una manciata di cover estratte dal repertorio del leggendario folk singer Pete Seeger (1919-). L’approccio a cui si fa riferimento è schiettamente live , diretto e immediato: tre giorni di sessioni, nessuna vera prova, un gruppo di musicisti con cui suona per la prima volta (fatte salve alcune eccezioni). L’atmosfera che pervade "The Seeger Sessions" è estremamente vitale ed emozionante, una lunga festa dove la spontaneità e la danza la fanno da padrone.

A un anno di distanza dal ritorno acustico di "Devils & Dust", Bruce Springsteen intraprende una nuova rilettura di quella folk-ballad tradition che scorre nelle viscere di un’America persa tra sogni imperialisti e oasi tecnocratiche. Un ritorno forte e stentoreo all’umanità vitale, semplice e spontanea, al tratteggio di stralci di vita tanto particolari quanto esemplari, dal sapore epico. Come l’ultimo Johnny Cash della serie "American Recordings", un altro gigante della musica americana si immerge nell’intima essenza della propria storia, raccogliendone il bagaglio emotivo e culturale. I brani contenuti nell’album sono quasi tutti traditional , alcuni risalenti addirittura al secolo scorso e oltre, che vengono fatti rivivere grazie alla sensibilità contemporanea dell’artista: la lontananza annullata, la realtà in fondo la stessa, il passato riportato all’atto del vivere presente.

L’operazione, in sé rischiosa perché facile alla sterilità, alla riproposizione senz’anima di melodie dalla presa facile, come il famoso nano che sulle spalle del gigante si erge maestoso senza merito proprio, risulta infine compiuta per diverse ragioni. Innanzitutto la sua estemporaneità: in un mondo dominato dalla velocità virtuale della rete e dall’artificiosità tecnologica così lontana dalla natura, si torna a viaggiare con i vestiti lisi e le scarpe consunte tra la polvere delle vecchie frontiere, con mezzi di fortuna e nessun centesimo in tasca; invece della patinata musica pop odierna, un pugno di strumenti unplugged suonati in una stanza come all’aria aperta, aspri e senza compromessi come il folk da sempre è. In secondo luogo, l’eccezionalità dell’evento e la compagine quasi casuale dei musicisti riuniti dal boss ne impreziosiscono il valore, accentuando la vitalità di una musica senza barriere, temporali e spaziali.

Infine, la ormai imponente personalità di Springsteen riemerge nella sua interezza, uno degli ultimi rocker rimasti a non accettare facili compromessi, in grado di perseguire una strada forse meno facile ma remunerativa, e certamente in linea con la propria carriera: la ricerca di un senso, una direzione nel caos.

Scorrendo queste travellin’ songs si toccano le lande sacre del gospel, le danze sfrenate del country, atmosfere jazzy d’inizio secolo, la virulenza fiera della protesta sociale, le sane scorribande del folk, il tutto accompagnato dalla voce biascicata, roca e profonda del leader. Irresistibile il girotondo saltellante di "O Mary Don’t You Weep", sospesa tra i campi di cotone dove lavoravano gli schiavi e lo sbarco di immigrati in America, tagliente l’inno sacro "Eyes On the Prize", malinconico incedere bluegrass in attesa della vera libertà (ultraterrena).

La denuncia antibellica e dolente della ballata irlandese "Mrs. McGrath" si immerge d’obbligo nelle brume celtiche segnate dalla povertà, la guerra come unico riscatto ma portatrice di solo dolore, mentre la guthriana "Jesse James" mitizza, trasportandola nella leggenda, la figura del bandito, novello Robin Hood che ruba ai ricchi per dare ai poveri, cavalcando una melodia godereccia e battagliera cantata mentre si fa bisboccia.

Un divertissement forse senza pretese, "The Seeger Sessions" testimonia comunque l’inesauribile vena creativa dell’artista di Freehold, e la sua capacità di ricrearsi, adattandosi all’incedere inesorabile del tempo senza chiudersi nella torre d’avorio di un passato lontano e irraggiungibile. L’unico difetto imputabile al disco è l’assenza di una reale carica anarchica e palingenetica nel fare cover, quella per intenderci che pervade "Cover Magazine" dei Giant Sand, in cui il filtro apposto dall’interprete nel riproporre l’originale come copia impone un tale marchio indistinguibile da rendere i pezzi dei nuovi brani; questa, comunque, è tutta un’altra storia, altre le canzoni scelte, altra l’anima del musicista, altre la radici trapiantate.

Non resta che assecondare il piacere che le orecchie e il cuore provano nell’ascoltare la vita che scorre in "We Shall Overcome", inarrestabile flusso fatto di gioie e dolori, un passato che riprende colore come se fosse magicamente innaffiato dall’Ubik dickiano .
