Genesi difficile quella del quarto disco dei Wilco; programmato per uscire nel 2001 (sembra proprio l’11 settembre…), l’album venne rifiutato dalla Reprise, “costringendo” Jeff Tweedy e compagni a troncare il legame con l’etichetta precedente per pubblicare il proprio lavoro presso la Nonesuch.

Sono cambiati non poco i Wilco dai tempi della divisione degli Uncle Tupelo, specie per chi li vedeva ancora come gli autori di “A.M.”. Aiutati dal missaggio di Jim O’Rourke (e scusate se è poco…), dimostrano in questo disco di possedere una spinta evolutiva incredibile; l’uso del digitale, dei “rumori” e degli “spazi” non avviene mai a caso, ma serve a creare sensazioni e a sottolineare sentimenti e parole.

La partenza è bruciante; “I am trying to break your heart” scoraggerà i “puristi” di certo roots-rock, dilatata com’è tra effetti digitali e stonature di piano che trasudano desolazione. Ci si risolleva per un po’ con “Kamera”, piccola gemma pop-folk che vi ritroverete a cantare sotto la doccia, per poi ritrovarsi nel vento freddo che spira tra le note dolenti di “Radio Cure”. Dopo la guerra, trattata con apparente “leggerezza” di “War on War”, arrivano due dei tre episodi migliori del disco: “Jesus, etc.” è di una dolcezza disarmante, mentre “Ashes of American flag” è la colonna sonora di quell’America desolata e fatta di sogni spezzati che tanti credono di cantare ma che pochi riescono a descrivere.

Se “Heavy metal drummer” ha l’allegria di certe melodie degli Xtc, “I’m the man who loves you” sembra scritta dal Beck più ispirato. Dopo la movimentata “Pot Kettle Black” e “Poor Places”, scarna e spoglia all’inizio e quasi “beatlesiana” si giunge, nel finale, alla terza perla di “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot”: “Reservations” è una delle più belle canzoni ascoltate negli ultimi anni, musica e canto così delicati e struggenti che toccano l’anima.

Finisce il cd e c’è la sensazione che Jeff Tweedy e i suoi Wilco abbiano creato un capolavoro. Composto da undici meraviglie musicali che sfuggono ad ogni classificazione, “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” è un serio candidato nella corsa per il disco dell’anno 2002.
