Nella virtuosa alternanza fra Wilco e attività solista, Jeff Tweedy non conosce pause. L’uomo solitario, ritratto nella copertina della sua quarta avventura solista, alle prese con un paesaggio lunare, desertico, non può che esser lui: dopo aver sconfitto depressioni vere o presunte, ricerca la definitiva pacificazione, con sé stesso e con il mondo circostante. Anche quando si ritrova costretto fra le mura domestiche, non perde occasione per scendere in cantina a suonare, in quello che è diventato ormai un affare di famiglia, con i due figli che si sono trasformati nella sua personale backing band. Spencer, il primogenito, suona la batteria e – più saltuariamente – l’organo, Sammy si occupa per il momento delle armonizzazioni vocali, mentre Jeff è all’opera su tutto il resto: chitarre, basso e, naturalmente, voce.

Le registrazioni di “Love Is The King” sono avvenute durante lo scorso mese di aprile, per ingannare la desolazione del lockdown, dopo che un intero tour dei Wilco era stato inevitabilmente rinviato a causa della pandemia. L’album presenta in primis una forte radice country, evidentissima in brani come “A Robin Or A Wren”. Ma, come nella migliore tradizione Wilco, Jeff ama increspare le proprie composizioni, arricchirle di contaminazioni, “sporcarle” di piacevoli imprevisti, come avviene – ad esempio – per mezzo delle dissonanze che elevano la closing section della title track. Nonostante la malinconia e la palpabile sensazione di impotenza, tipici del momento, Tweedy fa però di tutto per evitare che “Love Is The King” si trasformi in un lavoro mesto e umbratile.

Del resto, se Jeff è un campione nella scrittura di dolenti ballate acustiche (“Troubled”), se sa bene come colorarle di una sottile patina di elettricità (“Bad Day Lately”), come interpretare dell’ottimo root folk (“Even I Can See”) e come ricorrere a dolcezze spazzolate (“Save It For Me”), conosce anche alla perfezione tutti i trucchi per costruire una perfetta “alt-pop song” come “Gwendolyn”.

Attinge quindi alla tavolozza dei colori più vividi per alleviare la tristezza e far viaggiare l’ascoltatore, anche in un periodo nel quale gli spostamenti risultano inibiti. Tweedy fa sognare, e persino visualizzare, le sconfinate route americane attraverso i gradevolissimi uptempo “Opaline”, “Natural Disaster” e “Guess Again”. E la vita, d’improvviso, torna a sorriderci, e a riempirsi d’un mondo d’amore.
