The Cure: “Boys Don’t Cry” is their first song to cross a billion streams on Spotify. The band celebrates with a reissue

“Boys Don’t Cry” by the Cure has crossed the billion-stream mark on Spotify, becoming the first song by the band to reach this milestone. The single has also enjoyed a fresh wave of viral popularity, entering the TikTok charts in the UK and the US.

To mark the occasion, "Boys Don't Cry" is being reissued in three limited-edition physical formats – 12" vinyl, 7" vinyl and CD – available between March and April, alongside the digital release of the classic "Boys Don't Cry (86 Mix)", made available on streaming platforms for the first time.

Originally released as a single in the summer of 1979, “Boys Don’t Cry” became the title track of the US edition of the debut album “Three Imaginary Boys”. It's one of the emblematic songs of the Cure's early period and got a second life in 1986, when Robert Smith recorded a new vocal take and remixed the instrumental backing.

This version, created to promote the compilation "Staring At The Sea – The Singles", was not actually included on the album, which featured the original recording. The 7" single from that era, credited at the time as "New Voice – New Mix" and now officially renamed "Boys Don't Cry (86 Mix)", is being released digitally for the first time.

All the tracks included in the new editions have been remastered by Matt Colton.

Active since 1978, the Cure have sold over 30 million records worldwide, headlined Glastonbury Festival on four occasions, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Next summer the band will be touring Europe. In Italy, the Cure, alongside Lenny Kravitz and Robbie Williams, will headline the three days of the Firenze Rocks festival, set for June 12, 13 and 14 at the Visarno Arena.

Robert Smith will also curate the Teenage Cancer Trust concerts at the Royal Albert Hall from March 23 to 29, featuring, among others, Elbow, Mogwai, Manic Street Preachers, My Bloody Valentine, Garbage and Wolf Alice.

The Cure have also recently made it to the big screen with their live film “The Show Of A Lost World”. The film documents the show held at the Troxy in London on November 1, 2024, to mark the release of the album “Songs Of A Lost World”. That night, in front of three thousand fans, the Cure performed the entire album live for the first and only time, as part of a thirty-one-song set overall. Among those in attendance were Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Ed O’Brien of Radiohead, Boy George, actor Pedro Pascal and many others.

Meanwhile, rumors about the new album by Robert Smith and co. keep piling up. If it took 16 years for the follow-up to “4:13 Dream”, it might take a lot less for the successor to “Songs Of A Lost World”. Robert Smith recently stated that the new Cure album is “virtually finished”, while a third project is already in the works.
