After their 2024 comeback with "Songs Of A Lost World", which ended a sixteen-year recording silence, the Cure already seem ready to open a new creative chapter. Robert Smith has in fact revealed that the band has recorded enough material for three albums, and that the follow-up to "Songs Of A Lost World" is now complete.
Speaking to BBC 6 Music during Primavera Sound weekend in Barcelona, where the Cure kicked off their European tour and Smith also made a surprise appearance during Olivia Rodrigo's concert to unveil their new collaboration, the English band's frontman gave an update on their studio work. "We've recorded songs for three albums", he explained. "The second one is finished and is about to be handed over to Universal".
The next record, however, won't mark a departure from the dark mood of their last effort. On the contrary, Smith describes it as an even darker album: "If anything it's even more bleak than 'Songs Of A Lost World'. Bleak is a terrible word, but it's a pretty dark album. It's connected to 'Songs Of A Lost World', even though it tackles the same themes from a different angle".
The Blackpool-born singer explained that making the record was an especially difficult experience emotionally. "It was a hard album to write and record. I did a lot of work at home because I kept getting it wrong. I was devastated by the deaths of several people in my family, and I wanted that to come through above all in the vocal performances, in something I could listen back to and love over time".
Alongside this album, Smith confirmed the existence of a third record born from the same sessions that began back in 2019, but with a completely different feel. "The third album is strange", he explained. "Now that I'm working with Olivia, a lot of people will think it has something to do with that, because it's genuinely upbeat. It's very pop". While distancing it from the sonic world of the "Guts" popstar, Smith described the project as his own personal take on Cure pop: "It doesn't sound melodically like what Olivia Rodrigo does, but it's my idea of Cure pop. It'll probably be about twenty BPM slower than any of her songs, but compared to what we've done in recent years it's really energetic. It really pushes".
Smith's comments confirm that the material the band has amassed in recent years could add up to a genuine trilogy following on from "Songs Of A Lost World": a second album already finished and due out soon, followed by a third, lighter and more melodic record, in sharp contrast with the twilight mood that has long defined the band's most recent output.
Meanwhile, the Cure are back on stage for good. After shows at Primavera Sound in Barcelona and the NOS Alive Festival in Portugal, the band will spend the whole summer playing a long run of shows across the UK and Europe, with appearances at the season's biggest festivals.
