“Mixes Of A Lost World” è l’impegnativo album che raccoglie ben 24 versioni remix delle tracce contenute nel disco che lo scorso primo novembre ha segnato il ritorno discografico dei Cure dopo quindici anni di assenza. Album impegnativo perché si tratta di quasi due ore e mezza di ascolto, un lavoro che rinnova il non facile rapporto dei Cure con la musica elettronica e il rimaneggiamento delle proprie canzoni, operazione già avvenuta con risultati a dir poco altalenanti sia in occasione di “Mixed Up” (nel 1990), sia in tempi più recenti con “Torn Down” (era il 2018). Progetti che la maggior parte dei fan super-oltranzisti dei Cure non vedono troppo di buon occhio: il loro integralismo li porta a considerare gli originali come intoccabili. Non la pensa così Robert Smith, che conserva intatto il piacere per l’esplorazione, trovando sempre interessante osservare come il materiale da lui composto possa assumere contorni e contenuti imprevedibilmente mutevoli attraverso l’intervento di autorevoli nomi del circuito electro internazionale.

In questo caso ci troviamo al cospetto di un’idea monstre: ciascuna traccia è stata rieditata tre volte da un parterre di assoluto rispetto. Four Tet, Orbital, Paul Oakenfold, Trentemoller, Chino Moreno dei Deftones, Daniel Avery, Mura Masa, Craven Faults, giusto per elencare i nomi più noti, con menzione d’onore per i “nostri” JoyCut, che non sfigurano, portando un pezzettino di tricolore grazie alla personale trasmutazione industrial di “Drone:Nodrone”.

Ognuno ci mette il proprio istinto, vi trasferisce il proprio know-how, il proprio feeling, le proprie vibrazioni, la propria visione, e i risultati spaziano dalla balearic deep house più fighetta alla techno-house più martellante, senza mai perdere di vista il nucleo centrale della canzone, l’unica regola ferrea imposta da Robert Smith. Abbiamo citato alcuni degli artisti più famosi, che attirano interesse nei confronti dei contenuti del disco, ma ci si può ritrovare a essere particolarmente colpiti dai remix elaborati dai producer di “seconda linea”, come nel caso di Meera che si occupa con ottimi risultati di “All I Ever Am”.

Nella parte finale della compilation intervengono band di una certa rilevanza, alcune delle quali in passato hanno anche aperto tour dei Cure. 65daysofstatic, Twilight Sad e Mogwai si sono prestati all’operazione: i primi mettono le mani su “All I Ever Am”, i secondi su “A Fragile Thing”, mentre i Mogwai ammantano di una texture post-rock il brano che chiude la sequenza, così come del resto fungeva da epilogo all’intero “Songs Of A Lost World“, “Endsong”, il miglior commiato possibile dell’ennesimo capitolo di un’invidiabile saga.

La darkwave dei Cure, sempre molto legata all’immaginario the Eighties, rivisitata per mezzo di alcune delle avanguardie digitali contemporanee, trova una seconda, una terza, una quarta vita, nuovi orizzonti verso i quali dilatarsi a dismisura, finendo per approdare in territori inizialmente inimmaginabili. Non sempre i risultati si dimostrano all’altezza, alcune versioni rimangono rispettose degli originali, altre realizzano una più netta rettifica del concept iniziale, ma il disco resta coeso nonostante l’eterogenea matrice dei contributi.
