“As this post goes up we're playing in Catania, Villa Bellini. Last CSI date. Legitimate question: what now?”. With this cryptic post, Massimo Zamboni commented on Facebook on the final leg of the reunion tour by Consorzio Suonatori Indipendenti. The CSI's journey came to an end last night, Saturday September 12, in Catania. At Villa Bellini, in the closing show of Sotto Il Vulcano Fest, Consorzio Suonatori Indipendenti brought “In Viaggio” to a close, the tour that reunited the band's entire historic lineup on stage: Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, Massimo Zamboni, Gianni Maroccolo, Ginevra Di Marco, Francesco Magnelli and Giorgio Canali. A comeback that, over the span of just a few weeks, took on the shape of something more than a simple reunion.
Setting off on August 28th from Marzabotto to Monte Sole, a place symbolically bound to the band's history and imagery, the tour crossed Italy over six dates, bringing back to the stage a repertoire that, thirty years on, has lost none of its power. The Catania finale sealed a series of shows greeted with enthusiasm, often turning into a kind of collective ritual in which the generational element never slipped into mere nostalgia.
After all, the CSI story remains one that hardly fits the usual coordinates of Italian rock. Born from the ashes of CCCP, in the Nineties Ferretti and his bandmates built, through “Ko de mondo”, “Gothic Line” and “Tabula Rasa Elettrificata”, a unique musical and literary language, one where electric tension, experimentation, politics, spirituality, history and literature all coexisted. A legacy now facing up to a present profoundly different from the one in which those songs were conceived. It's probably precisely this ability to escape nostalgic celebration that has given “In Viaggio” its strength. Ferretti's words, backed by Zamboni and Canali's guitars, by Maroccolo and Magnelli's sonic architecture and by Ginevra Di Marco's vocals, keep on asking questions rather than offering answers. Music that doesn't console or seek easy reconciliations, but goes back to interrogating memory, identity, ideologies and the contradictions of the present. It's no coincidence that the shows close on a line from “Buon anno ragazzi”, repeated until it becomes almost a mantra: “Nessuna garanzia per nessuno” ("No guarantees for anyone"). Words written some thirty years ago that, at the end of this new journey, once again seem to sum up CSI's whole attitude.
The Catania concert thus closes, for now at least, the Italian live chapter of the reunion. It remains to be seen whether the success of the six dates will push the Consorzio to carry the experience forward with new dates in the coming months. What's certain is that the project doesn't end here. “In Viaggio” will also become a film, currently in production, directed by Davide Ferrario and produced by Damocle, the independent production company founded by Valerio Mastandrea and Francesco Tatò.
On the horizon there's also “C.S.I. Mongolia”, a cultural project that picks up the threads of the journey the band made thirty years ago, which fed into the “Tabula Rasa Elettrificata” experience. After Ferretti and Zamboni's performance at the PlayTime Festival last July 4 in the C.S.I. Preludio format, the project is expected to culminate in 2027 with a concert by the full band in Mongolia.
For now, though, what remains is the image of the six members of C.S.I. together again on the Villa Bellini stage, the last stop of a journey that seemed consigned to history and which instead, in the summer of 2026, suddenly became present again. With no promises about the future and, of course, no guarantees for anyone.
