Rai 1 airs in primetime “Roma, Baby. Cremonini Live Circo Massimo”, the special dedicated to the concert that Cesare Cremonini held on June 6 in the setting of the Circus Maximus. Directed by Stefano Vicario, the film combines footage from the show with backstage material, following the Bolognese singer-songwriter in the moments immediately before and after the Roman evening.
Recorded during the first of the two concerts on June 6 and 7, the live show delivers a setlist that Cremonini has described as a “setlist as long as a lifetime”: nearly thirty years of career, from Lunapop to the most recent songs from “Alaska Baby”. The program includes tracks such as “Il comico (Sai che risate)”, “La nuova stella di Broadway”, “Logico #1”, “Poetica”, “Marmellata #25” and “Ora che non ho più te”, right up to the traditional closer “Un giorno migliore”.
Guests are not lacking: Jovanotti joins Cremonini for “Mondo” and “L’ombelico del mondo”, Elisa sings “Aurore boreali” with him, while Luca Carboni appears on “San Luca”. There's also “Tie Your Mother Down”, a tribute to Queen, as well as “50 Special”, the track that launched Lunapop back in 1999.
The special arrives at the end of a season that sold over 350,000 tickets across major arenas and the Circus Maximus, but it also marks a turning point in the artist's path. Cremonini has in fact announced he wants to step away from the world of huge gatherings for now: "The numbers game has become almost an obsession. In my case, the urge to evolve as a person and as an artist wins out".
The next chapter will be “Amateur”, his tenth album of new material out October 23rd, recorded at Studio 13 in London, founded by Damon Albarn. The record, which Cremonini has stressed was "written, played and recorded without artificial intelligence", further centers the saxophone, an instrument that accompanied him through a difficult personal phase: "The sax saved me from the self-destructive side of that period". November will then bring the "Amatour", playing arenas in Milan, Bologna and Turin, with Donny McCaslin as special guest. The jazz saxophonist, also known for his decisive role on David Bowie's "Blackstar", had already been involved in the making of the new album.
