Cesare Cremonini will release his tenth album of new material, “Amateur”, on October 23rd, recorded at Studio 13 in London, founded by Damon Albarn. The record is being presented as a fresh, clear-cut new chapter in the journey of the Bologna-born singer-songwriter, who in recent years has made the saxophone an increasingly central instrument in his music: it's also played by the naked figure with a head replaced by a golden skull chosen for the cover. Accompanying the announcement is a programmatic statement: “Amateur was written, played and recorded without artificial intelligence”.
Back in June, Cremonini had already hinted that the new record would have nothing to do with the scale of stadiums: “It will take me to play wherever the next album asks me to play.” Hence the tour's name, “Amatour”, which will kick off in arenas in November. The first eight announced dates are November 15, 16 and 18 at Unipol Forum in Milan, November 27, 28 and 30 at Unipol Arena in Bologna, and December 9 and 10 at Inalpi Arena in Turin. Mastercard-holder presales will open on September 7, followed on September 8 by presales reserved for those who purchase the physical edition of the album at the Universal Music store; general sale starts on September 9.
Special guest on the tour will be Donny McCaslin, the jazz saxophonist also known for his key role on David Bowie's “Blackstar”. He had initially only been brought in for “Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)”, but Bowie later decided to hand the entire album over to McCaslin and his band. The musician had already been named by Cremonini as one of the collaborators on the album currently in the works.
Meanwhile, tomorrow evening Rai 1 will broadcast in prime time “Roma, Baby. Cremonini Live Circo Massimo“, a special directed by Stefano Vicario and built around the June 6th concert, featuring footage from the show and backstage. “It's been a long journey that took me from theatres to clubs, to arenas, to stadiums and to the great venues, exactly where, 27 years ago, I was lucky enough to dream it. Today I feel a great sense of liberation, gratitude, enthusiasm and desire for the future”, Cesare Cremonini said at the end of the tour.
