The best singles of the week

From Fontaines D.C. to Nick Cave and Lennon-McCartney jr.: the most interesting new releases

Fontaines D.C. – “Starburster”

A new single from Fontaines D.C. has arrived: it's titled “Starbuster” and previews the Irish band's upcoming album, “Romance”, announced in recent days with a minute-and-a-half teaser inspired by Shining by Stanley Kubrick and a 90-second musical taster (which isn't the music from “Starburster”). Produced by James Ford, “Starburster” recounts a panic attack experienced by Grian Chatten at London's St. Pancras station. The enigmatic video, directed by Aube Perrie, features the Dublin band's frontman emerging from a house with a bruised face, set to sounds built on loops and drum machines.

King Hannah – “Davey Says”

Following the title track, which featured Sharon Van Etten, King Hannah have released a new single from their upcoming full-length return, “Big Swimmer”, out May 31 via City Slang. The track, titled “Davey Says”, follows in the vein of their alternative rock, looking back to the sounds of the 90s while still sounding fresh and original.

James McCartney – “Primrose Hill”

A new song credited to Lennon-McCartney has appeared on Spotify and YouTube. The track was in fact written by James McCartney, son of Paul McCartney, and by Sean Ono Lennon, son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. James McCartney has also launched a competition for anyone who wants to create a video inspired by the song, which is decidedly poetic and romantic, and has hinted that this is just the first step in a more regular collaboration with Sean Ono Lennon, recently the author of the album “Asterism”.

Can – “Vier”

Lost fragments resurface from the Can planet. The legendary kraut-rock outfit has just released a live track, “Vier”, taken from “Live In Aston 1977”, out May 31 on double vinyl, double CD and digital. So far the German band have released, on Mute Records, “Can Live In Brighton 1975”, “Can Live In Stuttgart 1975”, “Can Live In Cuxhaven 1976” and “Live In Paris 1973”.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis – “Song For Amy”

The soundtrack to the Amy Winehouse biopic “Back To Black“ is out today, ahead of the film's cinema release on April 18, with Marisa Abela playing the English star. “Back To Black: Songs From The Original Motion Picture” also includes an original track by Nick Cave dedicated to the late London diva, who passed away on July 23, 2011. The song is titled “Song For Amy” and is available from today alongside the film's soundtrack.
