Paul McCartney releases trailer and release date for the documentary “Man On The Run” – The video

The new documentary dedicated to Paul McCartney finally has a release date. Titled “Man On The Run”, the documentary, directed by Oscar-winner Morgan Neville (“20 Feet from Stardom”, “Piece by Piece”), will stream on Prime Video starting February 27th and will focus on the most delicate and least documented phase of the musician's career: the years immediately following the breakup of the Beatles. In the official trailer, shared by McCartney himself, memories emerge from that period of disorientation lived through in 1970. “I felt very depressed, but I was lucky, because I had Linda by my side”, Macca recalls, looking back on the weeks following the end of the Beatles adventure.

“Man On The Run” also traces the birth and rise of Wings, the project with which McCartney managed to rebuild his artistic identity in the 1970s, already the subject of the recent book “Wings – A Band on the Run”. There's also an intimate look at his relationship with John Lennon and the gradual deterioration of their bond: “We'd argued and all that, it's true: but we'd loved each other our whole lives”, confesses McCartney, offering an affectionate and disarming memory of one of the most important partnerships in the history of pop music.

Produced by Neville's Tremolo in collaboration with MPL and Polygram Entertainment, “Man on the Run” presents itself as an intimate journey through Paul McCartney's 1970s, from the shock of the Beatles' breakup to the formation of Wings in 1971 alongside his wife Linda. A journey marked by lineup changes and internal tensions, but also by resounding successes, such as the 1973 album “Band On The Run”, which cemented the band's fame with tracks that became classics, like the title track and “Jet”.

Producers include, alongside Neville, Chloe Simmons and Meghan Walsh for Tremolo, Scott Rodger and Ben Chappell for MPL, Michele Anthony and David Blackman for Polygram Entertainment, with Caitrin Rogers and McCartney himself serving as executive producers.

With "Man On The Run", Neville aims to paint the portrait of an artist who, though coming off the unrepeatable experience of the Beatles, managed to reinvent himself, take on new challenges and build another essential chapter of his musical career.

The Wings era had already been documented by the film "One Hand Clapping". The feature takes us back to 1974, when the band led by the former Beatles bassist was working on the identically titled live-in-studio album "One Hand Clapping". The album dates back to August 1974, when the band was enjoying its seventh consecutive week atop the UK album charts with "Band On The Run". It was recorded during the sessions that saw McCartney and Wings working at Abbey Road Studios with the aim of making both a documentary and a potential live record. Made in just four days under the supervision of David Litchfield, the album had never been officially released until now, despite huge demand, although various bootleg versions have surfaced over the years.

The documentary, directed by David Litchfield, reveals the look and feel of the era, exploring the band's historic recording session at Abbey Road Studios. The film also includes the previously unreleased “Backyard Sessions” – which shows Paul McCartney on acoustic guitar performing beloved tracks from his discography – as well as the unreleased track “Blackpool” and personal pieces like “Twenty Flight Rock”, the song he played for his Beatles bandmate John Lennon the first time they met. “It's so wonderful to look back on that period and see the little live show we put on. We actually made quite a bit of noise. It was a great moment for the band, we started to find success with Wings, which had been a long time coming”, McCartney commented.
