Paul McCartney: his albums ranked from worst to best according to Mojo

31-05-2026

To mark the release of Paul McCartney's new album, “The Boys Of Dungeon Lane“, which is already winning over fans and critics alike, British magazine Mojo decided to bring some order to the ex-Fab's discography, drawing up a ranking from the worst title to the absolute pinnacle of his post-Beatles output. Biographer Tom Doyle went through the former Beatle's entire career, compiling a ranking of all his albums. “At 27, after the end of the Beatles, Paul McCartney felt almost superfluous – Mojo recalls in its introduction – He compared his own situation to that of astronauts returning from the Moon: ‘What do you want to do with the rest of your life?’, he asked himself. His return to normality would be a bumpy one, marked by a constant self-doubt that clashed with the seemingly self-assured image shown to the public in the documentary ‘Get Back‘. From the understated debut of his first solo album ‘McCartney’, through a string of albums, by turns refined and eccentric, across the Seventies, Paul built a new band, Wings, conceived as an extension of his own itinerant family. That experience, however, came to an abrupt end after the surreal arrest for marijuana possession in Japan in 1980. Like many of his Sixties contemporaries, McCartney too seemed to lose his way during the following decade, before fully rediscovering his inspiration in 1997 with ‘Flaming Pie’. Looking back, McCartney's erratic solo career should come as no surprise. He has always maintained that the difference between the Beatles and their contemporaries was that the Fab Four were, by nature, outsiders with an artistic sensibility… For someone often regarded as particularly attentive to commercial concerns, McCartney is first and foremost a pop experimentalist, as both the Wings catalogue and his solo output demonstrate: a run of albums that highlight both his eccentricity and his extraordinary melodic gift. Moreover, McCartney has almost always acted on instinct rather than out of a cold obsession with success”.

While we wait to see where the new arrival will land in his discography, here is Mojo's ranking of Paul McCartney's best albums (full feature here)
