Morgan on Sanremo: "It's like Christmas, it deserves to have music inside it. De Martino? What difference does it make?"

Morgan once again spoke about the Sanremo Festival during the Rome Film Fest, where he presented "Non importa dove", the documentary dedicated to him, directed by Francesco Fei and Consuelo Moschella. "Sanremo is one of the few occasions when television focuses on the song, and I love the song format," Morgan explained, stressing the value of an event capable of bringing millions of Italians together in front of the screen every year. "Sanremo is like Christmas, because it's one of the few moments, for so many years now, when Italy, when the family comes together. There's Christmas, Sanremo, then Easter... though that's less powerful," he joked.

According to the former frontman of Bluvertigo, the Festival has by now become an institution that transcends its individual protagonists and artistic directors. Precisely for this reason, though, it would deserve very different treatment from RAI and public broadcasting. "Sanremo deserves more, it deserves music, that's the only thing it's missing by now. So I wonder why RAI, or the State as a public service, doesn't take Sanremo seriously? Why does it humiliate it? Why can't they grasp that Sanremo is a beautiful thing? I'm tired of seeing the only national space available for songwriting being humiliated," he stated bluntly.

Morgan renews his "self-nomination" to artistically lead the event: "There's a whole host of people who know what they're doing when it comes to directing it, I'm one of them, but there are plenty of others too." The problem, in his view, is the lack of real attention to quality and musical competence: "It's been a wasted opportunity for far too many years now, and it breaks my heart, because if they understood it has real cultural importance, they would put music, competence, and the richness of Italian art and music into it."
Finally, a jab at next year's edition too, which Stefano De Martino is working on. Morgan doesn't seem particularly impressed by the first rumors about the possible lineup: "I saw the news about the cast... it seems like it's always the same thing, what difference does it make?"
