Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) releases a new solo track: here's "Hum Desiderata"

25-07-2026

Michael Stipe has shared a new solo track, “Hum Desiderata”, a further preview of the path leading to the release of his first album without R.E.M. The song arrives just a few months after “The Rest Of Ever”, unveiled last April during an appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert”, when Stipe also confirmed he was at work on his solo debut.
“Hum Desiderata” is for now available exclusively through Joyfully Waiting, a platform dedicated to sound installations. The project features Stipe alongside singer Elizabeth Hatmaker reciting “Desiderata”, the famous poem written by Max Ehrmann in 1927. Their voices rest atop “Hum”, an instrumental backing composed by Stipe himself together with Andy LeMaster.

In recent months the former R.E.M. frontman has stepped up his public appearances. In June he guested on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, where alongside Andrew Watt he performed “I Played The Fool“ for the first time, the theme song for the series “Rooster”. His recent appearance on “The Simpsons” has also earned significant recognition: the episode featuring him has been nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Animated Program category.
