Mi sono trovato spesso in difficoltà quando ho tentato di spiegare a qualche giovane amico, interessato alla musica, chi sono gli Rem e ciò che hanno raggiunto e rappresentato per il rock indipendente negli anni Ottanta e Novanta. Il fatto è che, pian piano, mentre il successo della band cresceva, la loro credibilità agli occhi degli appassionati e dei critici più “duri e puri” diminuiva in maniera inversamente proporzionale.

E, certamente, a peggiorare tale situazione, tanto da rischiare di renderla irreversibile, ha contribuito in maniera notevole l’ultimo album degli Rem, “Around The Sun“, il punto più basso di una carriera costellata da picchi elevatissimi e qualche passo falso, ma, mai prima di allora, caratterizzata dalla totale assenza di ispirazione e voglia di stupire.

I fan e la critica, delusi ed esterrefatti, si sono chiesti in quel caso come una band di tale livello avesse potuto concepire e pubblicare un album così debole, noioso e privo di mordente.

Eppure è accaduto e Michael Stipe ha anche avuto la capacità di riconoscere il passo falso, ammettendo che il gruppo aveva perso la propria obiettività e la spinta e che lui, Peter Buck e Mike Mills non si erano praticamente parlati per un paio di album.

A quanto pare, però, la cattiva accoglienza della critica e l’indifferenza che il pubblico ha riservato ad “Around The Sun” ha avuto, almeno, l’effetto positivo di far comprendere alla band che, anche dopo venticinque anni di onorata carriera e tredici album di studio, c’era ancora qualcosa da dimostrare e provare.

Non è dato sapere se la scelta di pigiare sull’acceleratore ed alzare il volume ed il ritmo sia stata suggerita dal progressivo esaurirsi dell’ispirazione, da ragioni di mercato o dall’intervento del  produttore Jacknife Lee, ma sta di fatto che questo metodo, che “Accelerate” annuncia sin dal proprio titolo, ha prodotto effetti benefici sul suono degli Rem: l’album dura appena 35 minuti ed è composto dalle canzoni più veloci e d’impatto che Stipe e soci abbiano scritto almeno da un decennio a questa parte, tutte suonate ed interpretate con un senso di gioiosa nonchalance.

Il paragone più semplice ed immediato potrebbe essere quello con “Monster”, tentativo mal riuscito di virare verso il glam-rock, compiuto dalla band già quindici anni fa, ma sarebbe fuorviante.

Infatti benché anche “Accelerate” sia popolato di chitarre fumanti e batterie pestate, non soffre delle imperfezioni e delle clamorose sviste del suo predecessore e, lungi dal voler essere una nuova svolta marcatamente rock, prende il rock ‘n’ roll solamente come pretesto, sposandone l’attitudine, con l’intento di recuperare la perduta immediatezza e semplicità.

Più che alle ultime scialbe prove della band di Athens, questo lavoro finisce per rimandare ai fasti (indie) rock di “Document” (anno di grazia 1987). E non si può che essere soddisfatti quando le note di apertura di “Living Well Is The Best Revenge” richiamano alla mente quella favolosa cavalcata che fu “These Days” (da “Life’s Rich Pageant”, 1986).

Ma non c’è solo la velocità a rendere piacevole e godibile “Accelerate”: l’immancabile ballata (“Until The Day Is Done”) è particolarmente ispirata, il singolo scelto come apripista per l’album  (“Supernatural Superserious”) è tra i migliori e più immediati della band da molti anni a questa parte, grazie anche agli splendidi cori di Mike Mills. E c’è, poi, il colpo di classe di “Hollow Man”, sfavillante mid-tempo, dove, ad accompagnare la inconfondibile voce di quell’autentico fuoriclasse di Michael Stipe, gli strumenti acustici si sposano alla perfezione con il feedback di Peter Buck.

Non tutto, però, è compiuto in questa gioiosa macchina da guerra: “Houston”, che sarebbe potuta essere un piccolo gioiello di gentile folk acustico, è un’occasione mancata e, sporcata da onnipresenti distorsioni elettriche, viene normalizzata e sacrificata sull’altare della compattezza. “Mr. Richard”, nonostante le premesse, non riesce mai a decollare e, nonostante la brevità, risulta alquanto ripetitiva. Anche la finale “I’m Gonna DJ”, per quanto possa funzionare in Fm, rimane una canzone degli Rem geneticamente modificata che desta qualche perplessità.

Quel che è certo, in ogni caso, è che, superate le paure ed i timori iniziali, ad ogni nuovo ascolto “Accelerate” mostra le sue caratteristiche e svela la sua rude grazia: la splendida voce di Michael Stipe è sempre lì, le chitarre di Peter Buck (finalmente di nuovo in primissimo piano), delicate o ruvide che siano, pure. E non mancano i cori west-coastiani ed il puntuale basso di Mike Mills.

Un po’ della poesia e del mistero dei tempi passati è, inevitabilmente, perduto, ma questa, purtroppo, non è una novità.

Così, se non un definitivo ritorno alla forma dei bei tempi, il nuovo lavoro di Stipe e compagni dimostra almeno che nel cuore affaticato ed un po’ consunto della band, attiva oramai da un quarto di secolo, scorre ancora sangue fresco e che non è, per ora, ancora giunto il momento di mettere la parola fine ad una esperienza che, a tratti indimenticabile, ha segnato la storia del rock degli ultimi tre decenni.
