Subsonica

Palazzo dello Sport, Rome

Subsonica in augmented reality. A stage made up of five independent, mobile platforms, with endless possibilities for customization, able to move separately up to five metres in height, allowing even those seated in the stands a close-up view of the show. In this way, the Turin-based outfit redefine the standard conception of a live show, shifting the focus away from the centre of the stage towards unusual or rarely considered perspectives, exploring and expanding the sense of space and highlighting the qualities of each member of the band. All of this is reinforced by powerful visuals, a bath of light that amplifies the already considerable emotional charge and that has always helped give any Subsonica concert the feel of a rave party.

An extraordinary show, with an extremely high technological quotient, which nevertheless never loses touch with the band's human nature, with the warmth that every one of their songs manages to convey, and which reinforces the idea of Subsonica as an organism that relies on the essential contribution of each of its members, in a thoroughly egalitarian setup, avoiding the clichés of the frontman singer and the drummer relegated to the background. No: in the live dimension, the band now presents itself with all the musicians on the same level - a democratic approach that has probably dissolved the risk of an early breakup, and that has helped ensure a return to recording that is finally back on track with their best work.

The concert kicks off with four tracks taken from the recent “Augmented Reality”, which blend seamlessly with the evergreen hits of the band's glorious past, soon taking over the setlist entirely. Superclassics like “Discolabirinto” take just a moment to warm up the crowd and turn Rome's Palazzo dello Sport into one giant disco, where everyone dances, jumps, sings and loses themselves in the moment.

The capital always welcomes Subsonica with boundless affection, as Boosta points out during one of his remarks to the crowd. In the band's usual lineup, he's the first from the left, ready to climb all over his customary arsenal of keyboards. Moving the gaze rightward, you find Vicio, rock-solid on bass, then Samuel, the voice, possessed, charismatic, a true frontman, and further right still Max Casacci, a guitarist of priceless class, and finally Ninja, the metronome, on drums.

The gentlest moment comes midway through the set, with “Missili e droni”, closed out by a huge message appearing on one of the (also mobile) big screens positioned at the base of the stage, white and blinding against a black background, while the Palazzo dello Sport is plunged into total darkness: “Stop Bombing Gaza, Stop Bombing Ukraine”. Thunderous applause. Political and social commitment, after all, has been a constant throughout Subsonica's entire career.

There's also room for a guest, rapper Ensi, who arrives to the strains of “Il cielo su Torino”, stays by Samuel's side during “Scoppia la bolla”, performs his own “Numero uno” and then a cover of Neffa's “Aspettando il sole”, sung as a duet with Samuel, who has meanwhile moved to the front of the stage, into a space carved out among the crowd in the front section.

Twenty-seven tracks performed, over two hours of music, all of it repeated for just seven exclusive shows, a production that won't be transferable to the summer's open-air dates, since it's impossible to fit all the necessary equipment onto stages that aren't the band's own. Subsonica's tour, which opened at the Palaunical in Mantua, has already stopped at the Forum in Milan and the Zoppas Arena in Conegliano. After the Rome date, it will continue on April 10th at the Unipol Arena in Bologna, the following day at the Mandela Forum in Florence, and on April 13th at the Inalpi Arena in Turin.
