NINAJIRACHI - I Love My Computer

2025 (Nlv)
Edm, hyperpop

What if "Brat Summer" didn't actually end with 2024 and Charli XCC? That certainly seems to be the thinking of producer and DJ Nina Wilson, Australian, born in 1999, who goes by the stage name Ninajirachi. "I Love My Computer", her debut full length, gives us twelve reasons to agree with her. Twelve tracks that are mischievous in sound, theme and execution - to stick with the school-girl slang so dear to Wilson.

Dead batteries betraying us at the worst possible moment, sex with one's own laptop, taps on an iPod, firewall breaches and whatever else you can think of are the cheeky ideas running through a record that puts at its center the fact that, these days, our best friends and confidants are to be found in our digital extensions rather than in anyone made of flesh and blood. The nature of this friendly entity doesn't undermine, though, the genuineness and strength of feeling in a clutch of songs that are nonetheless heartfelt and, in places, touching.

The sound of all this, for Ninajirachi, goes by the name girl Edm (also the title of one of her older tracks), a tribute to the dance music she grew up on. Ninajirachi's songs are and remain radio-ready in feel, and their extraordinary sound design is anchored to the hyperpop and Pc music dictates of Charli and A.G. Cook (just think of the pillowy-smooth "iPod Touch"), yet dance flourishes are everywhere, pronounced from the outright pummeling opener "London Song" onward.

The Edm blend of "I Love My Computer" is dense and unpredictable, throwing off lightning-fast sparks of Sophie (practically everywhere, truth be told), Amnesia Scanner ("CSIRAC"), Moderat ("Fuck My Computer"), Skrillex ("Battery Death") and Justice ("It's You"). There's even a hint of italodisco echo in the melancholy piano and the way the verse is half-spoken in "Infohazard".

Ninajirachi's debut LP is an overwhelming digital wave. All you can do is stay alert at the water's edge, dive right in, and let it carry you wherever it pleases. Because it never steers you wrong.
