RKOMI - A Milano

2026 (Universal Italy)
pop-rap

The only thing I believe in strongly is that (even though we've always been drilled with the idea of staying true to yourself, which makes us lose sight of the importance behind transformation) you aren't yourself, you become yourself
(From Rkomi's Instagram stories)

Rkomi is another one who's been swallowed up by success, as has happened to so many others in recent years: Angelina Mango, Sangiovanni, Blanco, Thasup, just to name a few. A fast, violent ascent into the mainstream, culminating in his appearance at Sanremo in 2022, riding the wave of “Taxi Driver” (nine platinum certifications!): still a bit clumsy, cocky and insecure at the same time. Then came the introspection, the choice to shift down a gear, and the solid fourth album “Decrescendo”, more intimate and personal. This EP titled “A Milano” sounds like a return to his own roots, geographical ones included, stripping away all excess: 19 minutes, 7 songs plus an intro.

Reconnecting the threads of his own life, approaching Dante's “middle of the road” moment, thirty-two-year-old Rkomi is still capable of pulling off an explosive pop-trap track like “Carica”, a great mix of grit and catchiness. He sounds credible both when he tells his own story with emotional honesty (“Ferita”) and when he hits harder and flexes his skill over the beat (“Crazy Crazy”). Teaming up with rapper Promessa, he writes a banger like “Da palazzo a palazzo”, an all-out trap assault. He borrows urban melancholy from Dargen D'Amico and Tedua for “A mezz'ora da Milano” and “Calvairate California”. Noyz Narcos maybe coasts a bit too much on autopilot in his verse, but it's a minor flaw in an otherwise (brief) highly effective tracklist.

“A Milano” has the major flaw of being too short, and plenty of strengths to balance it out: it's personal both in its content and in its rapping, moving and compelling. That alone won't be enough to make Rkomi the name to flaunt in your stories just to look cool, but if you're after some good, contemporary Italian rap, it would be a shame to miss it.
