LITTLE SIMZ - Sugar Girl

2026 (Awal)
hip-hop, trap

Little Simz has always accustomed us to a steady stream of EP releases, which run alongside her main output without ever feeling superfluous, a parallel narrative that carries just as much weight as her longer-form works. "Sugar Girl" sets itself apart from her previous EPs through its collaborative nature: three of its four tracks are duets with other artists. In its own way, the EP also marks a relative departure from the recent "Lotus": while the London rapper's style remains as unmistakable as ever, this time there's a fairly heavy use of vocoder, lending her voice a certain shape-shifting quality. This is especially true on the opener "That's A No No", the only track without a featured guest, where Little Simz takes sole center stage, exploring the trap side of urban music, with an excellent flow in the closing section that redeems an otherwise fairly uneven track.

Things improve on "Game On", recorded with American rapper JT, a track the pair performed together during the first weekend of the recent Coachella and marked by a decidedly club-oriented sound. The following "Open Arms" is a hyper-rhythmic afro-tech cut shared with Nigerian singer Deela, while on "Telephone" the guest of choice is 070 Shake, who makes a decisive contribution toward a more "rock" approach - though rock as it might be interpreted by the "new" Charli XCX.

This is an outing that doesn't shift the core of Little Simz's music, a conscious hip-hop that uses "Sugar Girl" to bring together artistic pairings - perhaps fleeting ones - that further broaden the stylistic range of an artist who remains endlessly curious and never marginal.
