Quattro brani raccolti da queste registrazioni sono noti da anni: quattro cover scelte per modellare una delle quattro facciate di “Love You Live”, celebre disco dal vivo pubblicato dai Rolling Stones nel settembre del 1977. La C-side di quell’elettrizzante doppio vinile ha un sapore particolare, si distingue dal resto del materiale in quanto costruita con estratti di due secret show tenuti il 4 e 5 marzo di quell’anno a Toronto, presso El Mocambo, locale da poche centinaia di (fortunatissime) persone, che vinsero attraverso un contest radiofonico il prezioso biglietto per accedere alla sala. Due performance tenute sotto mentite spoglie, The Cockroaches, fantomatica opening band per gli eroi locali April Wine.

Dopo quarantacinque anni, e svariati bootleg che nel tempo hanno lasciato percepire quanto accaduto, l’esibizione del 5 marzo (più tre bonus dalla serata precedente) diviene finalmente un disco ufficiale dei Rolling Stones. Un set che propone la consolidata esplosiva miscela della più grande rock’n’roll band del pianeta. Una sorta di ritorno alle origini, l’immersione nell’atmosfera intima di un piccolo live club che genera una chimica particolare, una versione alternativa della storica formazione inglese, pur se sempre rigorosamente elettrica. Per l’occasione gli Stones scelgono di rivisitare alcuni classici del blues, ripensando a quando da adolescenti Mick Jagger e Keith Richards restavano per ore chiusi a strimpellarli in cameretta, cercando di ricreare gli stessi suoni.

In scaletta non possono certo mancano parecchi evergreen del loro repertorio, ma a guadagnarci sono soprattutto le canzoni all’epoca più recenti, quelle contenute in “Black And Blue” (su tutte spicca “Hand Of Fate”), il non esaltante disco che stavano portando in tour, lavoro che segnò il passaggio del testimone da Mick Taylor a Ron Wood, per la prima volta sul palco nel quintetto base assieme a Jagger, Richards, Watts e Wyman, qui affiancati da Billy Preston, Ian Stewart e Ollie Brown. Un concerto esaltante, che non lascia ancora intravedere i lustrini del successivo “Some Girls”, ma che propone quella “Worried About You”, che verrà incisa soltanto nel 1981, per “Tattoo You“. Un serissimo candidato al ruolo di miglior disco dal vivo di sempre dei Rolling Stones.
