The Rolling Stones have released “Divine Intervention”, one of two tracks on “Foreign Tongues” featuring Robert Smith of the Cure. The curious collaboration, recounted by Mick Jagger during the presentation of the new album, came about almost by chance. “I saw this guy in the studio, with his back to me, wearing a long robe,” Jagger recalled. “When he turned around he was completely covered in lipstick. I'd never met him before and I said to him: 'Wait, you're Robert Smith from the Cure!' He said: 'Yes!'”. Once the initial awkwardness had passed, the two started talking, and Jagger thought it best to bring him straight into the sessions for the new Rolling Stones album. “So I said to him, ‘Since you're here, you might as well do something.’ Sometimes that's how collaborations work. You go in and sing backing vocals.” This unpredictable collaboration gave birth to “Divine Intervention”, one of two songs on the album featuring the frontman of the band behind “Pornography“. On first listen, though, his presence might go unnoticed: the reason is simple. Smith doesn't sing on the track, but plays guitar, as confirmed by the album's official credits.
Alongside “Divine Intervention”, the Rolling Stones have also released the new single “Jealous Lover”, accompanied by a video starring actors Anya Taylor-Joy and Charles Melton.
"Jealous Lover" brings the band back to its rhythm'n'blues roots, in a track marked by Mick Jagger's falsetto and instantly memorable melodies. Alongside Jagger, the track features Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood on guitars, Darryl Jones on bass, and Steve Jordan on drums and percussion. Guests include Steve Winwood, who contributes Rhodes piano and organ, while Andrew Watt and Matt Clifford round out the lineup with further instrumental contributions and arrangements.
“Foreign Tongues”, the band's new album, will be released on July 10th.
