Se c’è un elemento che può dirsi decisivo nei soundscape più terreni di Steve Roach, quello è il deserto. Da quello australiano partì, ormai quasi trent’anni fa, la strada più visionaria e decisiva battuta dal maestro californiano, quella che con “Dreamtime Return” portò l’ambient music a divenire una delle forme musicali più efficace nell’evocare scenari e nel riunire spiritualità ed estetica. Da lì nacque, di fatto, quella che oggi per tutti è la musica d’ambiente, con una rivoluzione copernicana dell’idea di Eno: musica dell’ambiente e non più per ambiente.

Passato un po’ in sordina a causa delle uscite simultanee di “The Delicate Forever” e “The Ancestor Circle”, “The Desert Collection” è il primo volume di una saga che si prefigge di ripescare il meglio da quel terreno, arido e secco nella consistenza quanto incredibilmente fertile a livello di spunto creativo. Ad essere raccolti sono brani appartenenti al verbo più classico di Roach, antecedente la deriva ritual-tribale (nonché alle contaminazioni trancedeliche) e parallelo al percorso dedicato all’immersione interiore che lo ha impegnato in maniera crescente negli ultimi anni.

“Ghost Train” e “The Ribbon Rails Of Promise” sono quanto di meglio regalatoci dalla discreta collaborazione con Roger King in “Dust To Dust”: una visione nebbiosa, spettrale e notturna da un lato, degna del miglior Mychael Danna, e la vivacità pre-trancedelica dall’altro, la vita che si rivela nel calore torrido. La meravigliosa “The Eternal Expanse”, suite regalata all’imperdibile compilation “The Ambient Expanse” (un must per comprendere lo stato dell’arte ambientale nel suo periodo d’oro), è un paradigma che riassume in un quarto d’ora il succo della poetica di Roach.

Il cuore della raccolta sta però negli estratti da“Western Spaces” e “Desert Solitaire”, due capolavori frutto dell’unione di forze con i conterranei Kevin Braheny, Richard Burmer e Thom Brennan da un lato, e l’altro fuoriclasse Michael Stearns (assieme a Braheny) dall’altro. Dal primo tornano a brillare tre autentici classici: la litania cristallina di “The Breathing Stone”, il notturno livido di “New Moon At Forbidden Mesa” e la commovente epifania di “The Slow Turning”. Al secondo appartengono l’epica “Flatlands”, altro classico intramontabile, e il mantra catartico di “Specter”.

Una retrospettiva impagabile su un pezzo di storia della musica ambientale e dell’elettronica atmosferica tutta, da parte di un sovrano che dopo quasi quarant’anni di carriera si mantiene saldamente sul trono.
