Sanremo 2026: listen to Ditonellapiaga and Tony Pitony's cover of “The Lady Is A Tramp”, winner of cover night

28-02-2026

The duet between Ditonellapiaga and Tony Pitony won the cover night at the 76th edition of the Sanremo Festival. The Roman singer-songwriter, born Margherita Carducci, is competing with the track “Che fastidio!”, while for the evening dedicated to reinterpretations she chose to duet with Tony Pitony on “The Lady Is A Tramp”, a 1937 song whose most famous duo rendition is the one by Frank Sinatra with Ella Fitzgerald. Their rendition won over both jury and audience with its stage dynamic and vocal chemistry, emerging as the most voted performance of the night.

Watch below the version of Ditonellapiaga and Tony Pitony of “The Lady Is A Tramp”.

The track

“The Lady Is a Tramp” is a standard of the jazz repertoire and of American musical theatre, written in 1937 by Richard Rodgers (music) and Lorenz Hart (lyrics) for the Broadway musical Babes In Arms. Its first performer was Mitzi Green, who brought out its cutting irony and unconventional edge.

It was Frank Sinatra who turned the song into a cross-generational classic, recording it in 1956 for the album Songs For Swingin' Lovers!, arranged by Nelson Riddle, and reprised it the following year in the film Pal Joey. His version, buoyed by a dazzling swing orchestration and elastic phrasing, permanently defined the song's identity.

The lyrics portray an independent woman, impatient with the conventions of 1930s New York high society. The protagonist rejects the habits of the elite — dinners at a set hour, theatre attended for the sake of status, aristocratic gambling, snobbish small talk, furs flaunted in Harlem, or California described as “damp and chilly” — and claims a personal freedom made of wind in her hair, spontaneity and lightness, even at the cost of having no money. It's an ironic self-portrait that flips the label of “tramp” into a declaration of independence.

Who is TonyPitony

A thirty-something from Syracuse, TonyPitony hides behind an Elvis mask and, on Gianluca Gazzoli's podcast “BSMT”, describes himself as more of an actor than a singer. He passed through “X Factor” just long enough to get rejected, and has since found an underground yet surprising fame through classically built, seemingly romantic and intimate songs that are undercut by crude, off-colour irony.

Embarrassing, unrepeatable lines, dropped into songs that would otherwise sound harmless, polished and measured, and that are anything but sloppy in form and execution.

He's not the crude Bello Figo, still less the provocative, erotic Myss Keta. TonyPitony isn't pushing an inclusive sexual liberation, tearing down every taboo like some Hachiko; instead he plays on the border between serious, embarrassing and grotesque - in a word, he inhabits the ridiculous.

You don't laugh with him, you laugh at him, at his character. Whether his little theatre is meant to work as a distorting mirror of our society, wringing out a bitter smile, is a question left for the listener to answer.

Who is Ditonellapiaga

She opened the 76th edition of the Sanremo Festival with “Che fastidio!”, and was one of the revelations of the Festival's first night. Margherita Carducci, aka Ditonellapiaga, has now officially released the track, available on radio and digital platforms.

Written and composed by Margherita Carducci together with Alessandro Casagni, Edoardo Castroni and Edoardo Ruzzi, “Che fastidio!” offers up acid house sounds bordering on techno, and its lyrics tackle, with an ironic edge, the small and large constraints of everyday life. The lyrics describe the feeling of being out of place, observing with detachment the situations and dynamics that generate unease in the frenetic environment the artist moves through. The arrangement is credited to maestro Carolina Bubbico. On the Ariston stage, the performance was accompanied by a dance troupe led by choreographer Dalila Frassanito, with six performers reinforcing the song's rhythmic drive.

Set in a hotel during a party that gradually slides into the surreal, the video for “Che fastidio!” follows Ditonellapiaga through eccentric characters and choreography built around deliberately disorienting situations. The screenplay is by Matteo Corradini, direction by Frametank, while production is handled by Mine Studio, which also oversaw the project's creative direction. The video visually develops the theme of disorientation tied to the pressure to conform to models and expectations.

The new album

“Che fastidio!” introduces “Miss Italy”, the new album by Ditonellapiaga, out April 10th and already available for pre-order. The album stems from a phase of artistic and personal reflection, driven by the need to redefine her coordinates and language.

Written entirely by Margherita Carducci in collaboration with Alessandro Casagni, who also handled production, “Miss Italy” was preceded by the single “Sì lo so”. The project explores the relationship with aesthetic and social standards and the idea of adequacy, while maintaining a sound built around electronic and pop-dance elements.

This new artistic phase will also be presented live, with a club tour planned for autumn 2026.
