The Rolling Stones are back with new music ahead of the release of “Foreign Tongues”, due out on July 10th. The album arrives three years after “Hackney Diamonds” and marks a new chapter for the band led by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood. Two tracks precede the album: “In The Stars”, the first official single, and “Rough And Twisted”, previously circulated under the name Cockroaches and set to open the tracklist. Both will also be included on a physical release due out on May 15th. “In The Stars” develops a theme tied to fate and destiny, with lyrics that dwell on the idea of a path already written.
Listen to the two tracks below.
"Foreign Tongues" will comprise 14 tracks and was produced by Andrew Watt, who also worked on the band's previous album. Recording took place in under a month at Metropolis Studios in London, with the band joined by Darryl Jones, Matt Clifford and Steve Jordan. The credits also include one of drummer Charlie Watts's final recorded sessions. The album also stands out for its notable guest appearances: Paul McCartney, Robert Smith of the Cure, Steve Winwood and Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers.
In official statements, Jagger stresses the intensity of the studio work and the value of Metropolis's intimate environment, which fostered focus and engagement. Richards speaks instead of continuity with the previous album and insists on the playful side of the creative process, while Wood points to a particularly smooth atmosphere, with many tracks nailed in the very first takes.
The cover artwork is by US artist Nathaniel Mary Quinn, who describes the project as a direct reckoning with one of the longest-running and most influential forces in contemporary music culture.
