Michael Stipe breaks his silence: debut solo album gets a release date

13-10-2026

Michael Stipe wasn't joking at all when, in the pages of the New York Times Magazine back in 2023, he candidly admitted to being in "no rush" to release his long-awaited solo debut. Now, four years on from the very first timeframe floated for the project, the former R.E.M. frontman has finally revealed the details of his schedule in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times.

The first official taste will arrive on New Year's Eve, paired with a precise visual concept: "Five seconds before the new year begins, a new song will come out with a video that will pave the way for the album," the artist explained. As for the record itself — still untitled — fans will have to wait until May 2027. The lead-up has already begun in recent months with a preview of the track "The Rest of Ever", performed live on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

On the production side, Stipe confirmed he's working alongside the ever-present Andrew Watt and longtime collaborator Andy LeMaster, as well as what the singer wryly called "a rogues' gallery". "Andy and I are in the studio for three days mixing some of the songs we wrote together," Stipe said. "Beyond that, I think it's right to leave a bit of mystery."

Asked about the political nature of the new songs, the Decatur-born musician offered a nuanced reflection, in classic Stipe fashion:

I was talking about the record at dinner with someone who hadn't heard a single note of it. They asked me: 'Is it political?' I said no, not at all. Then I thought about it and added: 'Actually, just by virtue of it being me making it, given my position in pop culture, my reputation as an activist, and the kind of songs I wrote in the past with my old band, it's deeply political.' But it's not a topical, current-affairs album. Music is an enormously powerful medium, and right now I'm simply following my instinct, responding to what I feel I need from music and what I feel I have to offer.

Fifteen years after R.E.M.'s breakup, Michael Stipe's first solo chapter is shaping up to be a point of synthesis between the intimate and the collective, free of chart-driven urgency and guided instead by a pure pursuit of expression.
