A journey through one of the most legendary chapters in Bob Dylan's career, packed into an imposing 39-CD collection. On November 6, Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings will release “The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1976 Live Recordings”, a box-set documenting the second leg of the American singer-songwriter's famous tour, featuring a staggering 381 tracks, 371 of which never before released.
The project
The release allows for an almost complete reconstruction of Dylan's performances in the spring of 1976, through recordings recovered from the original tapes. Alongside the monumental edition will also come a triple vinyl containing the 22 tracks from the May 16, 1976 concert in Fort Worth, Texas, remixed from the original multitrack tapes. As a preview, a live version of “Going, Going, Gone”, recorded that very evening, is already available to listen to at this link.
The second part of the "Rolling Thunder Revue" kicked off on April 18, 1976 in Lakeland, Florida, wrapping up on May 25 in Salt Lake City after 27 dates. Compared to the first leg of the tour, in the autumn of 1975, the atmosphere had grown progressively rougher and more incandescent. Dylan, fresh off the release of "Desire", had turned his musical caravan into an unpredictable spectacle, somewhere between a rock concert, a collective happening, and traveling theatre. On stage he was backed by a highly prestigious lineup of musicians, including bassist Rob Stoner, violinist Scarlet Rivera and drummer Howie Wyeth, all of whom had already taken part in the recording of "Desire". On guitars were Mick Ronson, already a collaborator of David Bowie in the Spiders from Mars, Steven Soles, David Mansfield and T Bone Burnett. Among the most notable guests was Joan Baez, who returned to share the stage with Dylan for a series of duets, including "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Railroad Boy". T Bone Burnett himself, looking back on that experience, offers a particularly striking reading of the tour: "The Rolling Thunder Revue was the first national punk rock tour. It opened a door that led to a furious explosion of new music: The Clash, Elvis Costello, Ramones, Sex Pistols and many others. Dylan had done it again. He's good at walking through doors that nobody else can even see, doors that everyone else believes are walls".
Among the most significant moments documented by the collection is the concert of May 23, 1976 in Fort Collins, Colorado, from which Nbc's "Hard Rain" television special was drawn. That performance stood as one of the expressive peaks of the tour, with particularly intense, aggressive renditions of songs such as "Idiot Wind", "Shelter from the Storm" and "Maggie's Farm". In the essay accompanying the box set, music journalist Mikal Gilmore describes "Idiot Wind" as "one of the most furious and brilliant performances Dylan ever committed to camera". Gilmore also recalls the unrepeatable nature of that season, marked by spontaneous shows and an energy that can hardly be traced back to the conventions of a traditional rock concert. The 39-CD box set also includes a booklet with rare photographs and liner notes by Gilmore, offering a particularly thorough document of a crucial period in Dylan's artistic transformation. The material allows listeners to trace the evolution of setlists and interpretations across the tour, from the early Florida dates to the closing shows, with differing versions of classics such as "Mr. Tambourine Man", "Isis", "One More Cup of Coffee", "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and "Tangled Up in Blue".
The release is part of a broader effort by Sony Music to showcase Dylan's catalogue. New reissues are also planned for several landmark albums, including "Self Portrait" (1970), "Dylan" (1973), "Empire Burlesque" (1985) and "Knocked Out Loaded" (1986), alongside the vinyl return of the live album "Bob Dylan At Budokan", recorded in Tokyo in 1978, and the compilation "Greatest Hits Vol. 3". The box set "The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1976 Live Recordings" and the triple-vinyl edition dedicated to the Fort Worth concert are already available for pre-order.
