Kneecap have announced their recording comeback with “Fenian”, the new album out April 24 via Heavenly Recordings. The Belfast trio thus continues a journey that in recent years has often placed them at the centre of political and cultural debate, without ever slowing down creatively.
Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí describe the album as the direct result of the pressure they've come under: from terrorism accusations over their statements against the Israeli government, to cancelled shows, to official institutional condemnation. A context that, they explain, has only strengthened their resolve. "Fenian" is in fact a lucid, deliberate response to those who tried to silence them, and it was made together with Dan Carey, the producer who has also worked with Squid.
The band has honed a darker sound, in keeping with the mood of the times, but one still charged with a spirit of defiance and self-affirmation. The title recalls the warriors of Irish folklore and a term historically used as a slur against the Irish, here reclaimed as a symbol of those who keep speaking truth to power. It's a discourse that extends to the survival of the Gaelic language and culture after centuries of colonization, a theme central to Kneecap's identity as well. "The Paddies are back," they declare in closing.
Previewing the album is the single "Liars Tale", produced by Dan Carey and accompanied by a video directed by Thomas James, which you can watch below.
Here is Kneecap's full statement announcing the new release: "They tried to stop us by labelling us 'terrorists', with cancelled shows and statements from the Prime Minister himself.
We had all the resolve we needed. This isn't a knee-jerk reaction, but a considered response to those who tried to silence us. And they failed.
We made this album with Dan Carey, a producer we're honoured to have worked with. The sound is more sinister, because we're living in sinister times. But it's also defiant and triumphant.
Fittingly and proudly titled 'Fenian', the album takes its name from the warriors of Irish folklore, a term that later became a slur against the Irish.
Now we use it to define anyone who speaks truth to power.
After 800 years of colonisation, they thought the Irish language would die. It didn't, thanks to Muintir na Gaeltachta and all the Gaels who refused to let their culture and language be destroyed.
Kneecap ran the same risk... but we're still here.
The Paddies are back.”
