Kim Gordon returns with a new solo chapter. The former Sonic Youth bassist has announced the album "Play Me", out March 13 via Matador Records. The news comes alongside the first single, "Not Today", released as a statement of intent for the start of the year.
"Not Today" moves along an unstable balance between motorik drums and guitars, with Gordon adopting a vocal register different from her usual one. She herself explains the shift in approach: "I started singing in a way I hadn't used in a long time. Another voice came out". The single is accompanied by a video directed by Kate and Laura Mulleavy, founders of the Rodarte label, alongside cinematographer Christopher Blauvelt, confirming Kim Gordon's distinctive interest in the dialogue between music, fashion and cinematic imagery. "Play Me" is shaping up to be a compact, direct record. Gordon describes short, punchy songs made quickly: "We wanted short songs. We wanted to do it fast. It's a more focused work, and maybe more self-assured". Once again the collaboration continues with Justin Raisen, who has also worked with artists like Charli XCX and Yves Tumor.
Thematically, the album promises to follow the path that has long characterized Gordon's work, focusing on what she calls “the collateral damage of the billionaire class: the demolition of democracy, end-times technocratic fascism, the cultural flattening fueled by artificial intelligence and chill vibes”.
The title track builds a surreal pastiche, relentlessly reeling off the names of Spotify playlists over a trip-hop backing ("Rich Popular Girl", "Villain Mode", "Jazz In The Background", "Chilling After Work"), while the closer is "ByeBye25!", previously released, which reworks the opening of "The Collective" with new lyrics assembled from words banned during the Trump era.
Gordon's previous album, "The Collective", was well received by critics, landing on several best albums of 2024 lists.
